I recently found myself back behind the wheel of our 2018 Subaru Crosstrek after a several month hiatus, and in my eyes it’s still the great little crossover it’s always been. In fact, I might enjoy it even more now after driving several other vehicles in the interim. And while some cars are flashier, faster or bigger, the Crosstrek checks so many boxes that it’s hard to ignore its capability in a variety of situations.
Welcome to Atlantis
The last few months in Atlanta have felt more like Seattle with rain in the forecast on almost daily basis. These wet and nasty conditions can make for hazardous driving and a general feeling of dread whenever I hit the road during a storm as Atlantans inevitably lose all ability to pilot motor vehicles the precise second that one rain drop hits the ground. However, thanks to the awesome all-wheel drive and the Subaru EyeSight suite of safety features on our Crosstrek, I don’t have that wet weather anxiety that I might have in a different car. Minus any major calamity beyond my control such as inland sharknados or millennial truck drivers, I feel perfectly safe and in control while driving the Subaru regardless of weather — and that’s peace of mind that’s hard to come by.
While the size of the Crosstrek might be too diminutive for some, I tend to feel that it is just right for city dwellers. Even in the most crowded and cramped parking lots, I’m still able to thread the needle in the compact Subaru, positioning it in spots once deemed unparkable. The rearview camera is a great help in these situations as well, as each turn of the wheel changes the predicted path of the vehicle that is displayed on the infotainment system.
Room for Improvement
Despite being a solid vehicle with many great benefits, the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek still isn’t perfect. First, the stereo system leaves a bit to be desired. The sound quality inside the cabin isn’t great at all, with very little low end thump for those bass heads out there. I for one would love a bit more bump in the trunk, especially with the warmer temperatures approaching and my new compulsion to drive while streaming Czarface with the volume up and the windows down.
