  • The 2019 Ram 1500 is all-new and the 2019 Ford F-150 carries over a recent face-lift.

  • The F-150 Raptor is unrivaled for off-road performance in this class.

  • The Ram 1500 has an available 12-in infotainment system, the biggest in its class.

Full-size pickup trucks have always been one of the most competitive automotive segments and it's no different in 2019. Two of the big players in this game are the Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500. The Ford is consistently the best-selling truck, but the Ram is all-new for 2019 and its massive overhaul is definitely worth consideration. Let's take a look at which truck is good at what jobs and which one is better.

2019 Ford F-150 vs. 2019 Ram 1500 exterior

Exterior

The previous-generation Ram 1500 was pretty long in the tooth, but that has been remedied with an all-new look on the 2019 model. The new Ram is a great-looking truck with a much more premium aesthetic than its predecessor. It does a great job of what every truck seems to be trying to do: look rugged and premium at the same time.

The design of the 2019 F-150 is nothing groundbreaking and Ford trucks have looked pretty much the same for a long time. It's very boxy and has the look of a traditional pickup truck while also looking modern. It's certainly not a bad-looking truck, but it's not as pretty as the 2019 Ram 1500.

One notable difference between these two trucks is the cabin availability. The F-150 is still available with a single-cab, 2-door configuration, while the Ram 1500 can only be had as an extended cab or a crew cab. If you want a simple full-size pickup with just two doors, you won't find what you're looking for with Ram.

2019 Ford F-150 vs. 2019 Ram 1500

Interior

Pickup truck interiors have gotten so nice that they rival expensive luxury cars -- and they're priced accordingly. A nice thing about both of these trucks is that they can be had in a simple, no-nonsense, vinyl-seat configuration all the way up to a supremely luxurious cabin with leather seats, premium audio and all of the modern tech you could ask for. You can also have anything in between making it easy to customize exactly how nice you want your truck to be.

The interiors of these trucks are reflective of their exteriors. The inside of the Ram feels more modern and premium, and the F-150's interior is a little more old school. We think the Ram's interior is a little nicer and uses higher-quality materials, but they're both so customizable throughout the model ranges that anyone should be able to find an interior they like in both trucks.

Both trucks have intuitive infotainment systems available, but there's something special about the one in the Ram. The Ram 1500 is available with a 12-in touchscreen, which makes it the biggest in its class. This tall screen can either be used entirely for navigation or you can split it up and customize it how you'd like.

Mechanicals and Capability

If you're shopping for a truck, then performance and capability are probably important to you. Here's what both trucks have to offer under the hood.

2019 Ram 1500 Engines

  • 3.6-liter V6; 305 horsepower, 269 lb-ft of torque; 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway; Max towing capacity; 7,730 pounds

  • 5.7-liter V8; 395 hp, 410 lb-ft of torque; 17 city mpg/23 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 12,750 pounds

2019 Ford F-150 Engines

  • 3.3-liter V6; 290 hp, 265 lb-ft of torque; 19 city/25 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 7,700 pounds

  • 2.7-liter turbocharged V6; 325 hp, 400 lb-ft of torque; 20 city/26 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 9,100 pounds

  • 5.0-liter V8; 395 hp, 400 lb-ft of torque; 17 city/23 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 11,600 pounds

  • 3.5-liter turbocharged V6; 375 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque; 18 city/25 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 13,200 pounds

  • 3.0-liter diesel V6; 250 hp, 440 lb-ft of torque; 22 city/30 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 11,400 pounds

  • H.O. 3.5-liter turbocharged V6; 450 hp, 510 lb-ft of torque; 15 city/18 mpg hwy; Max towing capacity; 8,000 pounds

The F-150 has a lot more variety under the hood than the Ram 1500. The V6 in the Ram is a little better than the V6 in the F-150 in performance, fuel economy and towing.

The V8 engines in these trucks are almost identical on paper, but the HEMI V8 in the Ram is available with a new feature called eTorque. eTorque is a mild-hybrid system to give a boost to the engine adding a supplemental 130 lb-ft of torque and helps conserve fuel. This option is available on the V8 and standard on the V6 to which it adds a supplemental 90 lb-ft of torque.

The High-Output EcoBoost V6 in the F-150 delivers thrilling performance and it's standard in the Raptor trim. The F-150 Raptor gives you off-road performance that nothing in this class can match. The Ram Rebel is a nice off-road-focused truck, but it isn't on the same level as the Raptor when it comes to going fast off-road.

Like all trucks in this class, the Ford and the Ram come standard with rear-wheel drive with optional 4-wheel drive. Some trims of both trucks, like the aforementioned Raptor and Rebel, come standard with 4WD. Unfortunately for enthusiasts who prefer shifting their own gears, neither truck is available with a manual transmission.

For a long time, the Ram 1500 was the only truck in its segment to offer a diesel engine, but as of writing, there is no diesel available under the hood of the new Ram. The F-150, however, offers a Power Stroke diesel with excellent torque, fuel economy and towing ratings.

Pricing

Due to the lack of availability of a single-cab configuration, the Ram 1500 has a higher starting price than the Ford F-150. The Ram starts at $31,795 and the F-150 starts at $28,155. Along with having a lower starting price on the low end, the Ford also has a higher price ceiling on the high end. The top trim of the F-150 is the Limited model, which starts at $67,135 and the range-topping Ram 1500 Limited starts at $53,295. The Ram Limited is more comparable to the second-nicest F-150 which is the Platinum model that starts at $54,920.

2019 Ford F-150 vs. 2019 Ram 1500 conclusion

Conclusion

It's tough to declare a clear winner when comparing pickup trucks, but we prefer the new Ram 1500 over the F-150. The Ford definitely has a lot going for it, like a lot of powertrain options and the fantastic Raptor, but in the regular trims that most people actually buy, the Ram has a better V6 and a great V8 with the interesting eTorque mild hybrid system available. Both trucks offer however much you'd like of performance, capability and luxury, but the Ram is a more modern truck both aesthetically and mechanically.
