The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty 2500/3500 trucks should dramatically change Ram’s fortunes in the heavy-duty arena where Ford and GM have historically excelled. Building on the wild success of its award-winning 2019 Ram 1500 that was recently named the Truck of Texas and the North American Truck of the Year by auto media, Ram is swinging for the fences with the all-new Heavy Duty models.
Engineered for the really hard work, heavy-duty trucks must be durable and capable. Here, the Ram Heavy Duty draws a line in the sand, delivering a maximum of 7,680 pounds of payload capacity and 35,000 lbs of towing capacity. But, in delivering such massive capability, Ram made no compromises in convenience, passenger comfort or technology.
Two versions of the Cummins 6-cylinder turbodiesel and a HEMI V8 are available to power the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty trucks. Standard is the 410-horsepower HEMI V8 generating 429 lb-ft of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Next is a somewhat less potent version of the 6-cylinder Cummins turbo that develops 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque. Finally, with 1,000 lb-ft of torque, is the Cummins 6-cylinder delivering 400 hp. Each version of the turbodiesel gets its own 6-speed automatic transmission. Both the 2500 and the 3500 can be configured with 4-wheel drive. Ram didn’t announce any fuel ecomomy numbers when it unmasked the Heavy Duty at this year’s North American International Auto Show.
Under the Body
Forming the foundation for the 2500/3500 trucks is an all-new high-strength-steel frame with six separate crossmembers, hydroformed main rails and fully boxed rear rails. Allowing for not only plenty of stiffness for hauling heavy loads, the suspension includes Frequency Response Damping shocks all around to automatically adjust for vertical wheel input. This makes for more responsive handling under the full range of loads.
Whether for safety, driver assistance or connectivity, the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty trucks check all the boxes. A 360-degree camera display, as well as a back-up camera and rear-view cargo camera provide the driver with clear visuals when needed. The tire-pressure monitor not only keeps track of up to six tires on the truck, but also up to as many as 12 trailer tires.
The Uconnect interface with its 12-in touchscreen display is standard on all Heavy Duty trucks. A 17-speaker 750-watt Harman Kardon audio system is available. Push-button start, a rotary gear selector, a noise-cancellation system, five USB ports and up to three 115-volt household-like electric plugs are standard.
