Choosing the Los Angeles Auto Show to introduce the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition is wonderfully apt. This part of the world has seen many breathtaking sunsets. There’s even a famous boulevard of that name. And now the Beetle (once known as the New Beetle) is heading off into that metaphorical sunset.
Even though it was always more of a style statement than a practical form of personal transportation, it’s been easy to like the VW Beetle. But time and trends are forever restless, hence the Final Edition, which marks 2019 as the last year of production. At least the Beetle isn’t going out with a whimper, offering instead a decent bang for the proverbial buck.
What equipment does it have?
The 2019 VW Beetle Final Edition is available as a coupe or a convertible, in SE and SEL trim levels. Final Edition SE trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry/ignition, automatic climate control, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The Final Edition SEL trim adds 18-in alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights/taillights, front and rear parking sensors, sport front seats, leather upholstery with diamond stitching, navigation and a Fender-branded audio system upgrade.
What’s under the hood?
All Beetle versions are propelled by a turbocharged 2.0-liter/4-cylinder engine generating 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Average fuel consumption is 29 miles per gallon, and the Beetle uses regular gasoline.
When is it available and how much does it cost?
The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Edition is in dealerships now. The Final Edition SE coupe starts at $23,940, and the convertible counterpart is priced from $28,190. For Final Edition SEL versions, add $2,950 for the coupe or $2,700 for the convertible. New Volkswagen vehicles have a keen 6-year/72,000-mile warranty.
