Volvo has been making a serious comeback in recent years as a leader in luxury vehicles with some truly excellent products, including the XC60 midsize crossover what was all-new for 2018. This new XC60 embraced everything people love about Volvo like a tremendous safety record, quirky Scandinavian styling and luxury that can compete with other European rivals for a more affordable price.
Before we dive into what makes the Volvo XC60 such a strong value in luxury SUVs, let’s recap the details of our tester. It’s a 2019 model in the range-topping T5 AWD Inscription trim. This Volvo is loaded with safety and tech features including a Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system, premium leather seats, the Pilot Assist safety tech suite with various driver-assist features, a head-up display and much more.
Supreme Seat Comfort
Multiple Autotrader staffers and even their loved ones have commented on how comfortable the seats are in our XC60. Our content manager Ben noted that the leather is some of the most buttery smooth in the whole industry, which is saying a lot considering the Volvo’s luxurious competition. Our editor Dwight’s wife is shopping around for a luxury SUV and this Volvo is one of her favorites, partly because of the seats. She liked not only the soft leather of the seats but the fact that the bottom is extendable, a feature that’s gradually becoming more common in the higher trims of luxury vehicles.
Our content specialist Tommy also noted how comfortable the seats are and added that the massaging function is so soothing and relaxing that he had to turn it off after a few minutes out of a concern that he might fall asleep. To say that the seats might be too comfortable is a pretty strong compliment. Everyone who drove the XC60 was unanimous in praising the supremely comfortable seats.
Content Hits and Misses
The XC60, especially our fully loaded XC60, has a lot of features and tech that make it a strong value, even on the high end. One of our favorites are the aforementioned head-up display. While HUDs are starting to get more common on more affordable vehicles, those often include a distracting lens that sticks out of the car’s dashboard. On the XC60, it projects nicely onto the windshield in front of the driver showing important information without ever looking cluttered. It also automatically adapts to light conditions so it’s always easy on the eyes.
That said, there was one feature that we were surprised was absent on our XC60 and that’s rain-sensing wipers. Like HUDs, this is a feature that’s gradually becoming more common on a wider variety of vehicles, which makes it surprising that any loaded luxury SUV would be without them. This is a minor gripe, but it’s worth noting.
Versatile and Valuable
What people love about SUVs is their versatility. The XC60 is no exception and Ben enjoyed using it with the second-row seats folded flat to carry his mountain bike to the trails without requiring a special carrier on the outside of the vehicle.
Including destination charges, the Volvo XC60 starts at $40,795 and our particular example had a price tag of $58,495. That means it’s not a cheap SUV, but considering it has some of the best leather in the business, an interior rich in features and technology, and all the versatility you could ask for in this segment plus fun-to-drive character makes the XC60 an excellent value in luxury SUVs.
