2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: First Look

BMW is finally storming the luxury compact-sedan castle with the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. Although it shares a name with the 2-door 2 Series coupe and convertible, it doesn’t share everything. This is particularly true of its somewhat bulky exterior styling and its all-wheel-drive-only configuration. No doubt BMW is offering it only as AWD because it’s actually built on the front-wheel-drive platform of the X1.

To the Power

BMW is releasing the 2 Series Gran Coupe in 228i and M235i grades. Both derive thrust from the same 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In the 228i, it’s tuned to generate 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with a top speed of 130 mph. Those numbers jump in the M235i, where the engine is tuned to deliver 301 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque with a top speed of 155 mph. Both variants transfer engine power to all the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0-60 mph run takes six seconds in the 228i and a quick 4.6 seconds in the M235i. The extra oomph of the M235i comes mainly from a larger turbocharger and less restrictive exhaust system.

The AWD system includes near-actuator wheel-slip-limitation technology found in the new 1 Series. It provides quicker and more precise control of wheel slip.

BMW DNA

Although we don’t think the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe exterior looks nearly as good as the 2-door coupe, you will readily recognize it as a BMW. Likewise, the cabin, although only mildly similar to the other 2 Series entries, also has sufficient BMW styling cues. There are plenty of standard features like power front seats, navigation and a suite of safety/driver-assist technologies.

When and How Much?

Dealers should begin seeing the 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe in the opening weeks of 2020. We think pricing for the 228i will begin around $40,000. Find a BMW 2 Series for sale
