  • The 2020 BMW M340i is the latest variant of the new-generation 3 Series
  • Due summer 2019
  • Not an M3, but still rapid and lavishly equipped
  • Pricing to be announced

Making it's debut at the 2018 LA Auto Show, the 2020 BMW M340i is the most powerful version yet of the new-generation 3 Series. It's not a card-carrying high-performance M3, but the engine output -- 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque -- will probably be more than sufficient for those seeking thrills within the bounds of reasonable sanity. And that still makes it the most energetic 3 Series without an M badge.

Let's step back for a second. We just mentioned the new 3 Series and it's the seventh generation that debuts for 2019. It's bigger, lighter, quieter, safer, tech-richer and supposedly a much more entertaining drive than its predecessor, which was still one of the best cars in the premium compact sedan class. The entry level version, the 330i, is due early next year.

When Will The 2020 BMW M340i Be Available And How Much Will It Cost?

It goes on sale summer 2019, in rear-drive form or with all-wheel drive (using the xDrive suffix to make the distinction).

It's still too early to talk money. But let's take the 2019 Audi S4, a natural rival to the 2020 BMW M340i, as an example. It starts at around $51,000 and comes with 354 hp. So we can expect something perhaps a little higher once next summer comes along.

Speaking of rivals, there's also the Mercedes-AMG C 43 sedan, which packs 362 hp. It looks like the 2020 BMW 340i is shaping up to be the enthusiast's choice.

What's Under The Hood?

The 2020 BMW M340i is the 3 Series variant powered by an inline-six engine, a classic BMW configuration. It has an aluminum block and head, displaces three liters, features variable valves and cams and it's turbocharged as well.

How Quick Is It?

Click the 8-speed automatic transmission into launch mode (BMW won't offer a manual transmission), let the standard-issue limited-slip rear differential perform its magic, feel the tires on the 18-in wheels grip the tarmac and the 2020 BMW M340i xDrive will sprint from 0-to-60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds.

What Other Equipment Does It Have?

The new BMW 2020 M340i has a sport suspension, stronger brakes than the 330i, full LED exterior lighting, an array of advanced driver aids, digital instrument cluster, optional self-parking and a digital assistant that's activated by saying the words: "Hey, BMW."
