Moms have their hands full as it is, so to help ease some of the stress associated with buying a new car, we put together a list of five things to keep in mind when buying your next car. Answering these questions will help you be informed to make the best purchase possible for your family.

1. Safety

The number one concern on almost any mother’s mind is her children’s safety. When it comes to automobiles, she should ask whether the airbags could be turned off (to protect a child in a car seat), how it handles in an accident or rollover and if there are accident prevention features. Depending on where you live, ask how the car manages in bad weather or challenging terrain.

2. Space

If you have twins or two young children, find out if the car can fit two car seats comfortably. If you have more than two kids of want to be able to pick up the grandparents at the airport, a third row might be something to look into. Is there enough cargo or trunk space for your stroller? Feel free to bring your car seat and stroller with you to see how they fit. Do you have long-legged children? Will they be comfortable in the back?

3. Entertainment

Does the vehicle come with a standard or optional TV/DVD player? Is there one for each child and a place to plug in headphones so as not to distract mom while she’s driving? Is it a drop-down DVD player that could obstruct vision from the rearview mirror? Can the driver control the entertainment system from the steering wheel?

4. Doors

Do the doors and trunk open from the key remote so you can put the groceries, dog and kids in when your hands are full? Is there a door on each side of the minivan? Is the minivan door easy to slide open and closed? Can kids and adults climb easily in and out of the third row?

5. Cleanliness

If moms know their little ones will inevitably spill or get markers on the back of the driver’s seat, then ask if the upholstery or leather can be cleaned, and if so, how. Ask if the outside paint is chip-resistant for when sporting equipment bonks the side. Can you take it to the kids’ car wash fundraiser or does it require special cleaning?

Remember, if the dealer seems less than knowledgeable or unwilling to answer any questions or veers the conversation away from your concerns, feel free to take your business elsewhere.
