As we reported in November, new powertrains are the biggest news in Ford’s revamped-for-2011 F-150 lineup. Ford has moved the needle up with its introduction of a new 6.0 liter V8, while moving the consumption needle down with the resurrection of a V6. The new standard six is the very fresh 3.7 liter, while a turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5 liter V6 should satisfy both the tech-savvy and eco-sensitive. Both offerings speak to Ford’s desire to stay in the front of the pickup pack in sales, affordability and relevance.

That attitude takes a huge step forward with the news of Ford’s work in partnership with the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power and Folsom Technologies, on a hydraulic hybrid powertrain. In a nutshell, this already-proven technology (typically in larger, commercial-type vehicles) stores energy – in the form of hydraulic fluid – in a pressurized accumulator. Designed as a secondary power source to the pickup’s standard powertrain, the pressurized fluid is converted into energy on demand. That lightens the load on the engine, and has the potential of increasing stop-and-go efficiency two-fold, suggesting 40+ mpg in real-world usage. It also preserves a pickup’s towing capability; no need to leave the trailer or bass boat at home!

Efficiency is most improved in stop-and-go driving, which is similar to the gains enjoyed by gas/electric hybrids. The obvious benefit for hydraulic generation is the elimination of the battery and, of course, its subsequent disposal. We’d think costs would be lower, also, as pump technologies are seemingly better established than battery technologies. Ford has been researching the application of hydraulics to a truck drivetrain – with supplier Eaton – since 2002; the result of that research was installed on an F-350.

This isn’t the first time research has led to a 40-mpg F-Series. In 2008, an Illinois Institute of Technology start-up designed a bolt-in hybrid system adaptable to a stock F-150 drivetrain. Promising a 15-mile range in electric-only mode, the mods suggested up to 41 mpg in 30 miles of variable speed driving.

In light of the political turmoil in the Middle East, and subsequent spike in the cost of oil, new technologies can’t come soon enough. And with the imminent arrival of $4/gallon gas, can light-duty diesels for Ford trucks – with their potential for a very real 30 miles per gallon – finally move into Ford’s on-sale product plan?
