Rising gas prices and growing environmental concerns are causing automakers to look into new approaches for their vehicles. One of the biggest changes along these lines will be coming from Cadillac. America’s poster child for luxury is looking to add four cylinder engines to its lineup in the near future.

Cadillac’s upcoming XTS full size sedan and ATS sport sedan are set to receive a turbocharged four cylinder engine, Car and Driver reports.

Cadillac refuses to comment officially on the specs of upcoming models, however, Left Lane News leaked a spec sheet back in January that showed the ATS with an optional four cylinder turbocharged engine.

Purists can take a sigh of relief, also listed on the leaked spec sheet were V6 and V8 engine options. The later is attached to the name ATS-V which implies that the new smaller car will be getting the same high performance treatment as its CTS big brother.

Caddy is looking to directly take on its German rivals so it only makes sense that there would be comparable options from the American car maker’s newest vehicles. Audi’s 2.0 liter turbo four is the main engine for the majority of its smaller cars.

This will not be Cadillac’s first foray into the four cylinder world. The company made four cylinder engines in the early 1900s. Later, in 1982 the company came out with the Cimarron, which was a poorly executed, re-badged a Chevrolet Cavalier. The goal may have been to lower the company’s average fuel economy ratings but the end result was car that lacked any real sense of luxury.

New, stricter restrictions on the same Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements loom for the auto industry but the stakes are much higher than they were in the 1980s, and the company is sure to deliver a much more desirable package out of its new turbocharged four banger.
