A serious incident where a steering wheel became detached from the column of a moving 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has prompted parent company General Motors to issue a recall. Fortunately, no one was hurt and no other damage has been reported, but 2,100 Cruze models in the United States and another 400 in Canada are now under scrutiny, having all been assembled at GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio.

The incident happened in Minnesota, where a family was traveling at 65 mph in a Cruze LT when the steering wheel came loose. GM has described this as an isolated incident, but will check all Cruze models for improper installation. The company also claims to have instigated changes to its manufacturing process to prevent this situation from happening again.

The number of Cruze compact sedans built in the United States to date is more than 100,000. “Unfortunately, an error was made,” said Jeff Boyer, GM’s executive director for safety. “We inspected more than 2,000 vehicles at the plant and several hundred more at dealerships.” Regarding the car with the detached steering wheel, Boyer said: “We are confident this is the only vehicle with this condition.” But he did add: “We want to look at certain customer-owned cars to further confirm the results of our investigation.”

GM is contacting owners, instructing them to return their Cruze to their dealer, where the service department will inspect the steering wheel and steering column, and make sure everything is as it should be, all at no charge to the owner.

Chevrolet’s customer service telephone number is (800) 630-2438. Or click onto www.gmownercenter.com. The company’s safety recall number for this incident is 11904.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a vehicle safety hotline: (888) 327-4236. Its website is www.safercar.gov and the relevant campaign ID number is 11V221000.
