The A4 spearheaded Audi’s stateside renaissance in the late 1990s, impressing American drivers with its winning combination of athleticism, refinement, and Germanic solidity. However, the A4’s backseat was on the snug side, even by the historically low standards of this segment. Moreover, enthusiasts took issue with the front- or all-wheel-drive A4’s nose-heavy weight distribution, which put the Audi at a disadvantage compared to its rear-wheel-drive competition. The A4 was close to greatness, but some felt it wasn’t close enough.

Enter the latest A4, which takes these complaints and decisively puts them in Audi’s rearview mirror. One of the best sport sedans (and wagons) on the market, it’s an impressively well-rounded vehicle with many virtues and few notable vices.

Here are AutoTrader’s five reasons to buy the 2011 Audi A4:

  1. More Practical Than Ever: Like no A4 before it, this one can accommodate four adults in satisfying comfort. Even long-legged folks up front won’t encroach on backseat legroom–something that can’t be said of the current 3 Series, for example. Rear headroom is also surprisingly ample by class standards. Buying an entry-level sport sedan used to mean neglecting the needs of your rear passengers, but with the A4, that’s no longer the case. You can also get the A4 as a wagon–the Avant–which enhances the car’s cargo-carrying ability without compromising its premium look.
  2. Crisp, Mature Styling: Once again leading the corporate charge, the current A4 introduced the design language that now defines most of Audi’s lineup, including the midsize A6 and the full-size A8. The A4 looks all grown-up with its trademark LED headlight accents and simple, clean profile. The clipped front overhang merits special praise–the A4 is derived from a front-wheel-drive platform, but like a rear-wheel-drive car, its front tires are stretched athletically toward its nose, yielding nearly perfect front-to-back proportions.
  3. Luxurious and High-Tech Interior: Long esteemed for producing sleek and rich cabins, Audi has continued this tradition with the A4, blessing it with high-quality materials and an unmistakably upscale appearance. The available MMI infotainment system with a console-mounted knob adds a layer of accessible techno-wizardry, and it also features a remarkably crisp display screen.
  4. Strong Fuel Economy: Unlike most rivals, the A4 is only available with a four-cylinder engine, but this turbocharged 2.0-liter motor has more to hang its hat on than just the 211 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque it generates. The EPA estimates combined fuel economy of 24-25 miles per gallon, which is ahead of the curve for this class.
  5. Sporty All-Season Handling with Quattro: To enhance handling, Audi engineers pushed the A4’s engine back from the nose a bit, and they also revamped the famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system, giving more priority to the rear wheels. The result is a delightfully balanced sporting car, especially when the optional sport suspension is specified. And of course, all-wheel drive also means all-season driving confidence, a significant plus for those who reside in areas where snow and rain are common.
