Numerous American cars have come and gone over the years, but perhaps the most iconic of them all, the Chevrolet Corvette, shows no signs of slowing down and the current “C6” generation is undoubtedly the best ‘Vette yet. Boasting enough firepower to run with virtually any car in the world, the C6 Corvette nonetheless sells for a fraction of the prices that most of its performance-peers command. It’s the poster-worthy ride that hard-working folks might actually be able to afford someday.

Here are AutoTrader’s five reasons to buy the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette:

  1. Singular Styling: The C6 Corvette features the first fixed ‘Vette headlights in decades (pop-up lights had been the norm since 1963), but there’s still no mistaking it for anything else. This car is proud to be a Corvette, and unlike the closely related C5 model, which had a rather bulbous rear end, the C6 boasts a suave clipped tail that befits its stature as a world-class sports car. Chevy’s showpiece faces more worthy rivals today than ever before, yet few if any of them can match the immediate visual impact of a ‘Vette.

  2. Three Great V8s: The under-hood arms race is escalating so quickly these days that the “base” C6 Corvette’s 6.2-liter, 430-horsepower V8 has 25 more horses than the old 5.7-liter V8 in the top-of-the-line C5 Corvette Z06. Not that we’re complaining. Suffice it to say that the regular Corvette has more power than most buyers will ever need. But if 430 ponies seem inadequate, don’t worry–you’ve got options. The more attainable one is the current Corvette Z06, which cranks out 505 horsepower from a 7.0-liter V8 that’s essentially a NASCAR motor with mufflers. And then there’s the no-expense-spared ZR-1 model, which has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 rated at a downright silly 638 hp. No matter which one you choose, you’ll be getting one of the best V8s on the market today.

  3. A Grand-Touring Sports Car: Unlike most members of the maximum-performance club, the Corvette is a car we wouldn’t hesitate to take on a cross-country trek. Its ride is surprisingly supple, and its cabin is pretty quiet at speed. Most ‘Vette drivers probably have other cars, but they don’t need them. This is the rare sports car that you can drive just about anywhere in satisfying comfort.

  4. Usable Cargo Bay: Underneath the Corvette coupe’s shapely rear glass is a hatchback cargo bay that can hold up to 22 cubic feet of stuff. That’s more than you can fit in the trunk of any sedan on the market–another example of how easy the Corvette is to live with on a daily basis.

  5. Choose Your Roof: If you go with the regular 6.2-liter V8, you get a choice of two body styles: a coupe with a removable roof panel or a soft-top convertible. The 7.0-liter Z06 comes only as a coupe with a fixed roof for better structural integrity, while the coupe-only ZR-1’s roof is constructed of lightweight carbon fiber. As with most aspects of the Corvette, there’s something here to please just about everyone.
