The past 10 years in the US has been nothing if not eventful. The financial meltdown, war on terror, countless natural disasters, social networks and the government's bailout of two American car companies are just the tip of the iceberg. But for all those years, Ford has been the exclusive automotive sponsor of American Idol, the Fox TV reality show and ratings dominator.

Young, talented virtual unknown vocalists have become household names while promoting Ford vehicles to an adoring television audience – Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia Barrino, just to name a few. What started as a risky and expensive promotional pitch from Fox Television, has paid off big for Ford, a company now enjoying a 36% share of the car market and a 63% share of trucks in the US.

And Ford has used the huge audience of Idol, which has reached almost 40 million viewers for the final episodes, to launch some of its most popular products such as the new Mustang V6, Fusion and more recently, the completely redesigned Ford Focus. "American Idol's high ratings make it a mini-Super Bowl every week," said Crystal Worthem, Ford Brand Content and Alliances manager. "The show attracts a huge audience that is able to connect with our vehicles in a fresh and meaningful way because of the custom content we have been able to create."

The custom content created for Ford by the young singing hopefuls on Idol is part of a growing trend of integrating the talent from a popular show into what amounts to a commercial. This is considered the ultimate form of marketing integration, and has become an increasingly popular with advertisers in recent years, particularly with the widespread adoption of channel-skipping digital video recorders. Chevrolet has recently gotten into the act with a blockbuster two-minute spot that integrates the cast of Glee singing along to the tune, "See the USA in Your Chevrolet."

And this week's final American Idol contestants and their subsequent fans can only be seen as a perfect target by Ford in light of the tough time American car companies have had attracting a younger demographic. As an added bonus, Lauren Alaina, 16, from Chatanooga, Tenessee and Scotty McCreery, a 17 year old from Raleigh, North Carolina both hail from truck country and sing country music – another natural fit for Ford. In an interview with AutoTrader after the top 13 winners were chosen, Scotty admitted his focus was on trucks. When asked his favorite Ford, he said, "That's easy, Ford F-150. Go big or go home. That's what my family's all about back home, man."

At the end of each final competition, Ford has been known to give the two remaining contestants that season's featured new car, but this year, to celebrate its 10 year history with American Idol, Ford has added two more free cars to the tally. Both Scotty and Lauren were asked to invite their favorite teacher to Hollywood for the star-studded finale and each of those teachers also received a new Ford Focus.

Reflecting upon Ford's 10-year commitment through thick and thin with Idol, Worthem is glad that Ford took the risk ten years ago when reality TV was risky business. "Reality shows are so common now that it is hard to comprehend how unique the property was at the time. Nothing like it existed."
