When Ford rolls out the 2012 Focus next year, it will be entirely new – except for the pair of blue jeans under your feet. That’s because the interior of the redesigned Focus will utilize recycled cottons from clothes, including denim jeans.

According to Ford, the recycled cotton will be used in areas such as carpet backing and sound absorption, which will aid in keeping the interior quiet. Ford says its goal is to improve the sustainability of the compact Focus, already known for excellent fuel economy.

“The good news is these jeans didn’t end up in a landfill, nor did we use the water, fertilizer, and land to grow virgin cotton,” said Ford product sustainability manager Carrie Majeske. “It’s an alternative our customers can appreciate, it’s cost-effective, and it’s better for our planet. These are the kinds of sustainable solutions we are looking for in all our vehicles.”

Ford says that on average, it uses enough cotton in each 2012 Focus for two pairs of adult-sized blue jeans, based on pounds of cotton per yard of denim and the number of yards of denim required to make a pair of jeans.

“Ford is continually looking for greener alternatives,” said Majeske. “One of our key goals is to use more recycled or renewable materials without compromising performance or durability. Recycled content is a way to divert waste from landfills and reduce the impact of mining virgin material.”

Ford sums up its environmental strategy with three simple words: “reduce, recycle, reuse.” The sustainability strategy describes not just the automaker’s use of the recycled jeans, but other environmentally-responsible products that have found their way onto cars, including yarns on seat cushions and resins for underbody systems. The Blue Oval has even used soy foam for seat cushions in its new 2011 Explorer.

The all-new Focus hits showrooms in March. Although an online configurator went live last month, Ford has not yet announced final pricing for the vehicle, which will come as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback.
