Ford is taking the law into its own hands. Kind of. What it’s really doing is making rear-view cameras available for most of its products, pre-empting a law that could come into effect in 2014, stipulating that this reversing aid be fitted to all new vehicles. “Visibility is one of the biggest customer concerns today,” said Jim Buczkowski, Ford’s director of electrical and electronic systems engineering. “That’s why we offer a rear-view camera system.”

Most of us have been in a car with a such a feature and appreciated the superimposed lines on the monitor that predict the reversing vehicle’s path. At the moment, however, it is usually part of an expensive navigation system in higher-end cars. And the picture comes up on the center console’s screen.

Ford’s equivalent will be available independent of any other pricey options and can even use a section of the rear-view mirror to act as a monitor.

“The rear-view camera system makes hooking up to a trailer so much easier,” said Doug Scott, one of Ford’s marketing managers. “Trucks and SUVs are ideal vehicles for this feature.”

The all-new 2011 Ford Explorer SUV will be one of the first to benefit and the company promises that a rear-view camera will optional on “nearly all Ford and Lincoln models by the end of 2011.” Ford expects it will cost up to $400, but could be as low as $250 when bundled into certain packages. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a slightly different set of figures if rear-view cameras become mandatory: between $58 to $203. Economies of scale will no doubt kick in at some point.

The advantages go way beyond lining up to a trailer. It could save money and time by not reversing into another vehicle or a building. And it could also save a life, since the law under consideration has come about due to the death of a child which happened while the parents were backing up the family SUV – an incident that is sadly far from unique. 18,000 people a year are hurt in this kind of accident, according to the NHTSA. To avoid such a tragedy, $400 is more than bearable.
