Three separate issues have prompted General Motors to recall around 100,000 of its vehicles.

The problem with the biggest impact – affecting 95,927 Cadillac CTS sedans (plus 13,000 in Canada), model years 2005 to 2007 – centers on a sensing system mat in the front passenger seat. Over time, this mat may kink, bend or fold, which could cause the electrical connections to break. If that happens, then the mat would fail to register the presence of a passenger and would therefore disable the relevant airbag. If there was a crash, the airbag would not activate and the passenger’s protection would be reduced.

GM has not yet set a date to begin the recall, stating that it will do so when the replacement parts become available. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service on 866 982-2339. The company’s safety recall number is 100355. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started investigating this issue last September and has allocated a campaign ID number: 10V644000.

A further 62,867 CTS sedans of the same model years are not subject to this recall, but Cadillac has extended the cars’ warranty coverage regarding this issue to 10 years or 120,000 miles.

The second recall applies to 1,262 2011 Cadillac Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The problem is a possibly defective rear axle cross pin. During its manufacture, the pin was not properly heat-treated according to specifications. This leaves it vulnerable to fracturing and becoming displaced within the axle. The driver may hear a banging noise. If the pin does shift out of position, it might cause the axle to lock up, reducing control and increasing the likelihood of a crash.

This recall will begin in January, when dealers will replace the pin free of charge.

Escalade owners may use the Cadillac customer service line above. Chevrolet owners are directed to 800 630-2438 and GMC owners to 866 996-9463. Or try www.gmownercenter.com. General Motors’ safety recall number is 100426. The NHTSA campaign ID number is 10V643000.

GM states that no injuries or accidents have been reported in connection to either of these possible defects.

The third recall is for 2,992 commercial trucks made by Isuzu. These are the 2006 to 2007 Chevrolet/GMC W3500, W4500 and W5500, and Isuzu NPR, NQR and NRR vehicles. It has been discovered that certain bolts securing the oil pipe were not tightened sufficiently at the factory. After prolonged vehicle operation, they may loosen, resulting in oil seepage or leakage from the packing seals. If oil is lost, the warning lamp will illuminate, there may be abnormal engine noise and a serious loss of oil could cause the engine to seize up completely. If this happens, the vehicle will experience sudden deceleration, increasing the chances of a crash.

This recall is expected to begin in late January/early February. Dealers will replace the packing seals and ensure that the bolts are tightened to a specific torque, all free of charge. Owners may contact Isuzu on 800 255-6727. The NHTSA campaign ID number for this is 10V63600. The administration’s vehicle safety hotline is 888 327-4236 and its website is www.safercar.gov.
