When it comes to buying a convertible that you want to use for the whole family, there are two key things to look for: ample backseat leg room and four or more seatbelts. Keep in mind that driving laws and safety suggestions are the same concerning air bags and car seats when it comes to convertibles. And don’t forget the SPF for the tots.

We’ve compiled a list of five fun family friendly rides to consider if that summer sunshine is calling your clan’s name.

1. Volvo C70

The driving experience on this sedan may not be as sporty as some of the other models below, but Volvo’s record for safety is incomparable. The C70 includes electronic brake assistance, roll bars behind the rear passenger seats that deploy when sensors detect an impending roll and a Whiplash Protection System that places head restraints at all seating positions. The rear legroom (33.9 inches) is the roomiest of any convertible.

2. Volkswagen Eos

From the look of it, the Eos looks compact and you wouldn’t expect it to be the second roomiest with 32.5 inches of legroom in the back. A few key safety features include sensor-deployed roll bars that are integrated into the seats, a crash-optimized front end and electronic stability control.

3. Saab 9-3 Convertible

With 32.3 inches of legroom, back passengers can sit comfortably without bonking their knees. Safety features include adaptive airbags with occupant sensing deactivation, driver and passenger head restraint whiplash protection systems and child seat anchors.

4. Audi S5

The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission S5 and its close relative, the A5, have the same rear legroom (31.9 inches), but the S5 looks sportier and handles more crisply. Although the trunk space is roomy (16 cubic feet), the rear seats also flip down for extra storage space when the whole family isn’t in tow.

5. BMW 328i

With 31.3 inches of rear legroom, the BMW is a bit of a squeeze for long-legged adults, but kids can sit in the back comfortably. The BMW’s safety features will make parents feel at ease having their family along for the ride: front and rear Head Protection System, Rollover Protection System, LATCH attachments on child-restraint safety installation and crash sensors that disconnect the alternator, fuel pump and starter from the battery and unlocks the doors, turns on the hazard and interior lights.
