The focus is on fuel economy for Honda's newest Civic. Following the Civic's debut in concept form at last month's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Honda has released more details about its fuel-sipping compact car, highlighting gas mileage and an all-new efficiency-focused model.

Fuel economy is the key for the all-new Civic HF, which Honda says will achieve more than 40 mpg on the highway, making it the most efficient non-hybrid Civic in more than 15 years. According to Honda, the Civic HF – which stands for "high fuel economy" – is purpose-built to achieve the best gas mileage possible, featuring aerodynamic bodywork and Honda's ECO Assist technology, which provides feedback to enhance efficient driving.

But fuel economy was on Honda's mind for all 2012 Civics, not just the miserly HF. The automaker says regular gasoline-engine models will achieve 39 mpg on the highway – and there's always the ultra-green Civic Hybrid, which will feature a lithium-ion battery for the first time ever. Honda projects that the Civic Hybrid will achieve up to 45 mpg, an increase of four miles per gallon over the current model.

For driving enthusiasts interested in more than just an eco-friendly ride, Honda also offers the sporty Si model. Available as a sedan or coupe, the new Civic Si puts out 200 horsepower – a slight power bump over the previous model's 197 horses – and still manages to achieve 31 mpg highway, also an improvement over the previous model's 29mpg EPA rating.

"The Civic is the only model in the industry that can deliver on all fronts – fuel economy, sporty performance, smart packaging, alternative fuel, and long-term value," said John Mendel, American Honda's executive vice president of sales. "For the ninth-generation Civic, we are emphasizing improved fuel economy across the board, from the hybrid sedan to the sporty Si model."

Although pricing for the new Civic hasn't been announced, Honda says more information will be available as the model draws closer to its on-sale date, slated for some time this spring.
