  • The Nissan Ariya is a concept electric crossover that looks close to production-ready.

  • It's rumored to be on sale in 2021—at an affordable price tag and with respectable range.

  • The Ariya indicates a new evolution in Nissan's design language.

You might remember the IMx, the concept car that Nissan showed off back in 2017. At this year's Tokyo Auto Show, Nissan introduced the all-new Nissan Ariya as sort of an updated version of that concept. It's an electric crossover SUV that looks a step closer to production than the concepts we've seen from Nissan.

If Nissan can bring the Ariya to the market in a timely fashion, it could seriously compete with the likes of the upcoming Tesla Model Y and Ford's Mustang-inspired electric crossover.

How Fast, How Far, How Much?

The Nissan Ariya is technically a concept vehicle, but it looks awfully close to being ready for production, and the rumor is that it'll hit U.S. dealers as soon as 2021. Unfortunately, we don't yet know any of the answers to the three big questions everyone asks about every new electric vehicle: How fast, how far and how much?

However, we have some clues. Nissan has said that its production BEV crossover, when it comes out, will have a range of about 300 miles and should come in at a mainstream price point. As for performance, the 0-to-60 mph time is expected to be under 5 seconds. The only engineering detail we have right now is that the Ariya will have two electric motors. This is a hint that there's a good chance the production model will have standard all-wheel drive.

Here's What We Know

We know the physical dimensions of the Ariya -- the crossover will be pretty similar to the Nissan Rogue compact crossover, but it'll be wider and lower to the ground, which gives it a decidedly more athletic stance. If it does come to market, it should slot into the compact SUV segment -- which is currently lacking all-electric options.

Nissan is also promising ProPilot 2.0, the next step in Nissan's semi-autonomous driver assistance technology suite, on the production-model Ariya. The suite will include hands-free highway driving, similar to what you can find with the Cadillac Super Cruise system. No production Nissan available in the U.S. is equipped with ProPilot 2.0 yet, so it's possible that the production-model Ariya will introduce the tech to our shores.

Nissan's also indicated that the Ariya could signal a new design language for the brand. The exterior is interesting and the front plays off of the V-Motion grille shared by most Nissan models, but we're more interested in the interior. It's very minimalist -- the 12.3-in screen has just one physical knob, and the rest of the controls appear to be via either touchscreen or haptic feedback. There's also a prominent digital driver information display in lieu of the traditional gauge cluster. It's a sleek and clean look that we hope to see in future production Nissans.

The Leaf Needs a Friend

The Nissan Leaf was one of the first all-electric cars from a mainstream automaker, and it's the best-selling electric car to date. When the Ariya -- or some version of the concept -- hits the market, it'll be nice to see the Leaf finally get an SUV counterpart that hopefully delivers similarly strong value.
