In hopes of bringing fresh, new Latino talent to the realm of car design, enthusiast site Terra Autos has launched their first-ever Car Design Challenge. To compete, site visitors need to sketch, scan, and upload their designs to Terra’s site. A jury will declare one winner, who will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2011 Chicago Auto Show in February plus a chance to present his or her sketch to a leading industry designer.

While winning this challenge doesn’t necessarily portend a future in automotive design, the chance to turn a sketch into a trip to the Chicago Auto Show is surely compelling for young, artistically inclined auto enthusiasts.

Diversity in design has become a prominent theme in the automotive industry. Korean Sangyup Lee drew an emotional response when his revival of Chevrolet’s American muscle car, the Camaro, was revealed. Women designed BMW’s 2009 Z4; Juliane Blasi penned the exterior and Nadya Arnaout created the shapes within. General Motors’ sixth Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn, is the highest-ranking African American in the auto industry and is responsible for acclaimed designs including the Chevrolet Malibu, Cadillac CTS, and Buick LaCrosse.

Young Latinos and Latinas looking for design inspiration within their community need look no further than former automotive designer Richard Velazquez, a native of Brooklyn, NY. At Honda he lent his hand to the styling of the 1998 Honda Accord Coupe, the 2001 Acura CL, and the 2001 Acura MDX. He later worked for Porsche, helping that automaker craft its first SUV, the Cayenne, and participating in redesigns of the 911 and the Boxster. Velazquez went on to earn an MBA at the University of California, Berkeley, currently works in management at Microsoft, and has long served in Latino business and engineering associations. Since 1998 he has served as the President of the Seattle Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, a group he co-founded after moving to Seattle.

It’s nice to know we live in an age where good design speaks for itself. Beyond providing a free trip to the Chicago Auto Show, perhaps Terra Autos’ Car Design Challenge will inspire more young designers to pursue their dreams.
