It’s time to come over to the dark side with this, the 2012 Porsche Boxster S Black Edition.

Seems Porsche has been listening to that old Rolling Stones hit, “Paint It Black” because that’s the color of almost everything in this car – body, roof, wheels (the lightest 19-inch alloys in Porsche’s current inventory), instrument gauges (usually white in a standard Boxster S), exhaust pipes, side air intake grilles, rear badge, dashboard, leather upholstery and door panels. A little contrast comes in the form of red brake calipers and metallic accents of the interior door handles, kick plates, gear lever, and steering wheel.

Making this version of the Boxster S even more awesome is a 10-horsepower jump in engine output. This mid-mounted 3.4-liter powerplant, configured in Porsche’s hallmark flat-six arrangement, kicks out 320 hp. Link it up to the optional seven-speed, dual-clutch PDK transmission and Sport Chrono Package with launch control, and the sprint from standstill to 60 mph is dispatched in just 4.6 seconds. Yet fuel consumption is a reasonable 20 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway.

The Black Edition is actually a way to help keep buyers’ bank accounts in the black, because it offers a lot of equipment that, if bought on top of a regular Boxster S, would be around $3,200 more expensive. There is the Design package that provides all the dark stuff; the Convenience package that offers adaptive bi-xenon headlights, rain sensor and wind deflector; plus the Infotainment Package with a touchscreen navigation system, Bose audio and XM satellite radio with traffic updates. This is all standard for a price of $65,200.

Admittedly, that’s still a heap of cash, but the Boxster S is one of the great open-top sports cars in the Audi TT/BMW Z4/Mercedes-Benz SLK territory. Once this black beauty comes out in spring, buyers should move quickly, because only 987 will be made for worldwide distribution (987 is the factory code for this generation of Boxster).
