Just when electric vehicles seemed to be the new big thing, the supercar comes rushing back into the news. Porsche has sold out its most expensive, most powerful and fastest street-legal sports car – the $245,000 911 GT2 RS – less than two months after its worldwide debut at the 2010 Moscow Auto Show.

This limited-edition, twin-turbocharged, 620-horsepower coupe – which can sprint from standstill to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 205 mph – has received customer commitments for all 500 units being built. Porsche has pre-sold 133 models in the United States; they will be delivered to their owners in February 2011, when they can enjoy the lightweight alloy wheels, carbon fiber body parts and a racer-like Alcantara-clad interior.

The 2011 911 GT2 RS joins Porsche’s stable of more than 30 models. And it appears that the rest are also moving well. Company executives expect the new 911 Speedster – priced at $204,000 and limited to 356 cars – to sell out by the end of October, after being introduced at the Paris Motor Show just weeks before.

Porsche is merging with Volkswagen, Europe’s biggest car maker. It plans to expand its lineup of sports cars and SUVs and sell 150,000 cars a year by 2014 – nearly twice its current business.

“Sales are performing quite well in the United States this year,” said Steve Janisse, Porsche’s manager of media relations. “Numbers are up 24 percent compared to last year. Models like the Panamera and all-new Cayenne are definitely contributing to this. And we launch the new Cayenne hybrid (in November).”

Porsche’s current rosy state indicates an underlying trend. “Luxury is coming back and its revival can be seen across all major markets,” said Daniel Schwarz, a Frankfurt-based analyst at Commerzbank AG. “People want those premium vehicles.” To bring the point home, an eFinancialCareers.com survey published this month notes that half of Wall Street finance professionals expect their 2010 bonuses to increase – the kind of people who buy Porsches.
