There was once a time, many years ago, when the Jeep Wagoneer was the apple of everyone's eye. Although it predated the current SUV craze, the Wagoneer was a sort of Range Rover back when the Range Rover was still wearing wellies and carrying around farmers who had more chickens than teeth.

The Wagoneer was so cool back in the 1960s and 1970s that everyone wanted it. Families wanted it to cart around their children. Farmers wanted it to cruise around their property. And they even wanted it in Iran. And so, it was sold there under the name -- this is completely true -- the Jeep Ahoo.

Yes, you heard that right: The Jeep Wagoneer was sold in Iran as the Jeep Ahoo. I have no idea how to pronounce this, other than the fact that it's one letter short of being the noise you make when you sneeze.

Here's how it went down: Back in the 1960s, there was an Iranian car company called Sherkat-Sahami that had an interesting manufacturing strategy: Rather than go to the trouble of designing and engineering vehicles for themselves, they would simply buy the license to vehicles already made by other car companies -- then they'd build those cars themselves. So they sold several General Motors vehicles, including the Chevy Nova, a Chevy pickup and the Wagoneer.

And so, the Jeep Ahoo was born.

Unfortunately, Ahoo production came to a conclusion with the Iranian Revolution of the late 1970s -- but Sherkat-Sahami lives on to this day. These days, it's been renamed Pars Khodro -- but their strategy still remains the same: Their entire lineup consists of Renault and Nissan models produced under license. My personal favorite is the Nissan Roniz or, as we know it, the Nissan Xterra. Consider it a modern-era Ahoo.
