Two unlikely companies announced Friday that they’re teaming up. Fender Musical Instruments, known primarily for its popular Stratocaster guitars, will work together with Volkswagen to develop a new upscale audio system for select 2012 VW models.

Dubbed the Fender Premium Audio System, the new sound system is intended to enrich the driving experience by adding concert-quality sound. The first Volkswagen to carry the Fender sound system will be the 2012 Jetta GLI, which hits dealerships in the spring. Soon after, the sound system will become available in other Jettas, finding its way onto Volkswagen’s all-new Beetle and the yet-unnamed “new midsize sedan” in the fall.

“The best seat in the house is now behind the wheel of a Volkswagen,” said Jonathan Browning, Volkswagen of America’s president and chief executive. “Our two iconic companies – one with a passion for driving, one with a passion for music – are joining forces to bring the raw emotion of live music to the driving experience.”

Using technology co-developed with audio expert Panasonic, the system blankets the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers designed to enhance quality better than traditional speakers. Other improvements include technology designed to eliminate distractions and harshness while underscoring harmonic richness.

“By partnering with Volkswagen on the Fender Premium Audio System, we are creating a unique partnership with a truly innovative company, allowing us to deliver a product that is as unique, expressive, and as dynamic as the customers who use it,” said Mark Van Vleet, Fender’s senior vice president for business affairs.

By joining forces with Fender, Volkswagen becomes just the latest automaker to team up with an audio specialist to implement a top-quality sound system in its vehicles. Other pairings include Lexus with Mark Levinson, Nissan with Rockford Fosgate, Audi with Bang & Olufsen, BMW with Harman Kardon, and Porsche with Burmester.
