Automotive technology is always evolving. Let's take a look at the tech behind the 2014 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid.

Two in One

The Energi is basically an electric car and a fuel-efficient hybrid rolled into one. In the efficient hybrid mode, the Energi runs off of a combination of gasoline and battery power, and it clocks an impressive 43 miles per gallon on the highway. The gasoline engine is a 2.0-liter, inline 4-cylinder. Total output from the engine and electric motor is 195 horsepower.

But what if you want to skip the pump altogether? You can with a plug-in. In all-electric EV mode, the Energi runs exclusively off of the batteries. The Fusion Energi uses high-density, lithium-ion batteries for electric power.

Charge It

It's easy to charge the Energi's batteries. Using the provided 120-volt charge cord plugged into a wall outlet, the Fusion Energi gets a full charge in seven hours. Use a 240-volt charger, and you'll have a full charge in two-and-a-half hours.

The Energi can travel about 20 miles before it needs a recharge. If you do most of your driving close to home or have a short commute, you may never have to gas up! In EV mode, it gets the electric equivalent of 100 mpg. Combine the gasoline engine with the electric motor and total range is 620 miles.

Having the best of both worlds offers some peace of mind, too. Say you're driving in EV Mode and the battery gets low. No problem: The Energi automatically flips over to hybrid/gas mode, and you just keep driving.

Show Me the Money

The only real downside to buying a plug-in right now is the price. This well-equipped 2014 Ford Fusion Energi runs around $7,000 more than a similarly equipped Fusion Hybrid.

We like the idea of a plug-in hybrid a lot, but $7,000 is a lot of money. Depending on how you drive, however, you can save more than $7,000 in fuel costs over five years of ownership. It might cost a bit more, but with all those savings at the pump, this car's price tag may very well pay for itself in the long run.
