Jeff Thisted: It takes no more than a quick glance at the sculpted power dome hood to figure out that the 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is all about performance.
Tracy Metro: And a quick glance is all you’re gonna get, as this supercar rockets from 0 to 60 in a mere 4.4 seconds.
Jeff: Leaving you staring in amazement while its four oval exhaust pipes disappear from view.
Tracy: Ah…and what sweet music pours from that sport-tuned exhaust!
Jeff: This is no ordinary car. The builders at the exclusive Mercedes-Benz AMG studios have left their indelible stamp throughout this all-new C-Class coupe, elevating everything from performance to suspension to style.
Tracy: And giving it a lot more than just muscle.
Jeff: The level of refinement is pure Mercedes-Benz. But there are important AMG distinctions, like this thickly padded three-point sport steering wheel. Notice how the top and bottom are flattened, trickling down from their racing program.
Tracy: And it makes it a lot easier to get in and out of the car, too.
Jeff: There are controls on the steering wheel that bring up different sets of information in the instrument cluster, including a Race mode that allows the driver to record lap times.
Tracy: So you’re never far from being reminded of the C-Class AMG’s performance orientation.
Our test C63 came with the optional multimedia package, which of course we recommend. It includes an in-dash DVD/CD player and this seven-inch high-res color display with hard drive navigation and voice recognition.
Jeff: There are multiple layers of AMG technology throughout this C-Class edition. Let’s fire this thing up. It’s got launch control and race mode, which is perfect for drag racing.
Tracy: The C63 uses a hand-assembled 6.3-liter V8 bearing the signature of the technician who actually assembled it. This powerhouse sends 451 horsepower to the rear wheels through a multi-clutch seven-speed automatic with manual shift mode.
Jeff: Not only does this engine provide more power than its competition like the BMW M3, but the power comes in lower in the rpm band, so you can get to it quicker.
Tracy: Another option we got in our test C63 is the AMG Development package. With this $6,050 option, horsepower rises to 481, and the time it takes to sprint from 0 to 60 drops by a tenth of a second.
Jeff: And the electronic limiter that ordinarily pegs top speed at 155? It increases the limit to 174 miles per hour.
Tracy: With speeds like that, it is comforting to know that AMG remembered to include a high-performance compound braking system in the Development package.
Jeff: At the end of the day, there is a price to pay for all of this performance. Fuel economy is in the EPA gas guzzler category, measuring a meager 13 city, 19 highway.
Tracy: Definitely not friendly to the average commuter’s wallet. But if you aren’t set back by the $83,675 price tag, then I am sure the $1,700 gas guzzler tax included in the price is not gonna matter, either.
Jeff: If the 2012 C63 AMG isn’t enough for you, you could always wait in line for the limited edition 510-horsepower C63 AMG Black Series.
Tracy: Now that car is something else. But honestly, with all that the brand-new AMG C63 Coupe has to offer, I am sure it will satisfy a whole lot of drivers.
