One of the most iconic convertibles to hit the road over the last 20 years is the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. These sleek, powerful and technologically-advanced machines have been driven by professionals, movie stars and those that understand high quality. Just as the previous generations have all dominated both in luxury and style, the 2013 Mercedes SL550 sets the bar even higher as this new SL could be the greatest ever.
The exterior of the new SL550 is simply sensational. The body is completely made of high strength aluminum which still incorporates styling cues from previous generations. Plus, just like the last few SL models, the 2013 convertible is also a hard top which folds away faster, in about 20 seconds, and smoother.
Since technology is a key factor which drives individuals to purchase a Mercedes, the 2013 SL550 incorporates some breakthrough, high-tech gadgets not only inside the cabin, but outside as well. For the 2013 model year, the SL550 will have a hands-free trunk that opens and closes with a wave of your foot because of a sensor located under the rear bumper. Inside, the optional Magic Sky Control brings the reason people want a convertible — without dropping the top. This exotic option switches the panorama glass roof from clear to tinted to either allow the sun or moonlight to shine in, or keep the interior nice and dark during those sunrise drives to work.
The rest of the interior of the 2013 SL550 is classic Benz: full leather, standard navigation system and a Harmon-Kardon sound system with subwoofers built into the foot wells that deliver playback quality that will shake your body, even with the top down. Speaking of the top down, another great interior option for the 2013 model year is the Mercedes Airscarf system. This option directs warm air to the back of your neck when the top is down and the wind is slightly colder than desired.
As for power, the new SL550 comes standard with a twin-turbo V8 engine that dishes up 429-horsepower and is capable of blasting to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. This advanced, more powerful engine is also capable of higher than expected miles-per-gallon highway fuel economy thanks to the twin-turbochargers that allow for instant power at lower RPMs than the previous naturally aspirated engines that need more fuel to create power.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 has what it takes to be called the best SL ever because of its power, technology and overall quality. Although the luxury/performance vehicle marketplace includes such great entries as the BMW 6-series or the Porsche 911, both of these do not offer the same prestige and quality of the SL550.
