We know that Cadillac can build a sport sedan. They’re proven that with the midsize CTS and now the compact ATS. But whatever happened to old-fashioned American luxury? You know, those big, cool cruisers that Cadillac more or less invented decades ago? The 2014 Cadillac XTS is a compelling answer to that question. Forget about lap times at Nurburgring; this full-size sedan is all about putting you in the lap of luxury. Here are five reasons to take one for a spin.
These days, luxury sedans are all about "sport" this and "handling" that. Here’s our question: What about a suspension that cushions impact like a couch on wheels? That’s exceedingly hard to find these days, but it’s exactly what underpins every XTS model. Thanks to standard magnetic ride control technology, you get a silky-smooth ride on practically any surface. To be clear, the XTS still handles respectably well, but ride comfort is where it really shines. You won’t do much better at any price.
Generous Back Seat
Sport sedan seems to be code for small back seat that tall folks won’t fit in, but the XTS marches to a refreshingly different beat. Even with a couple lanky guys up front, there’s ample legroom in the back. Confident and Efficient Power
If you know Cadillac history, you know that the Caddy badge has always stood for get-up-and-go capability. That’s another tradition that the XTS proudly upholds. The standard 3.6-liter V6 cranks out 304 horsepower, and you’ll feel every last horse — it has some oomph. Unlike a classic Caddy, however, the XTS is great on gas, returning up to 28 miles per gallon on the highway. If you want even more juice, try the Vsport model with its twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6. Even with standard all-wheel drive and a whopping 410 hp, this model still gives you 24 mpg hwy.
Although the XTS is a throwback in many ways, one glance at the ultramodern dashboard will remind you that you’re not in your grandfather’s Cadillac. The centerpiece is the CUE infotainment system, which bundles phone, music and optional navigation functions into an 8-inch touchscreen that operates similarly to an iPad. This is a sophisticated feature for an old-school cruiser, and it goes a long way toward broadening the XTS’s appeal. Believe it or not, even the entry-level Standard trim level comes standard with CUE, not to mention a nice Bose audio system. Upgrade to the Premium or Platinum trim and you’ll get standard navigation with a beautiful 12.3-in configurable gauge cluster, too.
Cadillac’s current design language has been challenging at times, but the XTS has a look that all generations can appreciate. On one hand, it has the timeless proportions of a luxury sedan, with a crisp, powerful hood and a long rear deck. The trademark tall, slender taillights further evoke Cadillacs of yore. On the other hand, the XTS is thoroughly up to date with its sleek, angular lines and eye-catching exterior lighting. Throw in the available 20-in chrome-trimmed wheels, and you’ve got an all-around aesthetic star.
