The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 isn’t as well-known as some big-bucks sports cars, but it should be. With its insane supercharged acceleration, the ZL1 is always the center of attention. In fact, this Chevy can keep up with some of the world’s finest performance automobiles — it’s just not priced like one. Here are five reasons why this Camaro earns its stripes.
The ZL1 has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 under the hood, and it’s basically the same one that was in the previous-generation Corvette ZR1 and the Cadillac CTS-V. Chevy rates it at 580 horsepower, yielding a 0-to-60 sprint of just 3.9 seconds. If you keep your foot on it, the quarter-mile time is 12 seconds flat — that’s fast. Very few production cars (at any price) can match the ZL1’s pace.
Chevy’s engineers worked long and hard to transform the ZL1 into a real athlete. It comes standard with magnetic ride control, which smooths out rough pavement for better control. The Performance Traction Management system helps to keep the 580 hp in control, and Brembo brakes help make sure the ZL1 can come to a quick stop. Still not convinced? No special performance model is complete without a few interior mods, and the ZL1 has some good ones. The available Recaro sport seats hold passengers tight during corners, and the small, flat-bottom steering wheel gives a more connected feel. The suede dash cover with red stitching is a nice touch, too. And like every full-featured Camaro, the ZL1 comes standard with a cool 4-pack auxiliary gauge cluster that’s a throwback to the Camaro’s muscle-car heyday from decades ago.
Sometimes you’ll hear about high-performance cars that have some features removed to save weight, but the ZL1 has enough hp for two Camaros, so Chevy can leave all the high-tech stuff in place. The 7-inch touchscreen with Chevy MyLink includes Pandora Internet Radio, and a crisp Boston Acoustics stereo cranks the tunes. In other words, if you’re looking for an ultrafast car without speakers or air conditioning, look elsewhere. The Camaro ZL1 is speedy and spoils all passengers aboard.
Like every new Camaro, the ZL1 sports sharp LED taillights that look great, but the real action is up front. A front splitter reduces lift at high speeds, while a prominent hood air extractor cools the engine. Beautiful 20-in forged-aluminum wheels complete the package. It’s not over the top like some special-edition Camaros from the past; instead, it’s tastefully aggressive, and that’s bound to enhance its public appeal.
