Until recently, Chevy’s full-size Impala sedan was best known for being the “large car” upgrade at the airport rental counter. But if you think the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala is just more of the same, you’re in for a serious surprise. They really sweated the details this time, from the boldly upscale exterior to the completely reinvented interior. We’ve got five reasons why the Impala is one of the best sedan values on the market.

Classic Cruiser

The Impala technically isn’t in the luxury-sedan category, but you wouldn’t know it from the way it rolls. On the highway, it’s quiet and cushy like American cars used to be, making 65 miles per hour feel like 45. On rough roads, it stays smooth and composed. It’s a premium ride without the premium price. This is what nice cars used to feel like, and we’re glad to see that classic American sensibility coming back.

Now that Lincoln’s stopped making the Town Car, airport limo companies should consider the Impala. The back seat is enormous, providing NBA-sized legroom and ample headroom, too. And the trunk is one of the largest in any car, measuring a colossal 18.8 cu ft. Strong V6

The Impala V6’s 0-to-60 time is a decent 6.8 seconds, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. When you unleash all 305 horsepower to merge or pass, the acceleration feels endless — it’s more like a V8 than a V6. If you like a little extra in reserve, you’re going to love this tried-and-true motor. And the trusty 6-speed automatic is always at the ready with slick, responsive shifts.

Surprising Fuel Economy

The big V6 is actually great on gas at 28 miles per gallon on the highway, but the base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is even better, delivering 31 mpg hwy. If that’s not enough, the e-Assist mild hybrid model gets an amazing 35 mpg hwy. That’s almost as frugal as an economy sedan. Still, many folks will want the old-school grunt of the V6, so it’s a real bonus that even the most powerful Impala remains respectably fuel-efficient.

Revamped Dash With Modern Tech

The previous Impala’s dashboard looked like it was built in 1986, but this one’s thoroughly up-to-date. Materials quality is much improved, and check out the cool blue light strip that wraps around the dash and doors. Not bad for what used to be a boring rental car, right? Available technology includes a colored driver information display and the intuitive MyLink infotainment touchscreen with smartphone integration. Just because the Impala cruises like a classic doesn’t mean it’s behind the times inside.
