Crossover SUVs have basically taken over the world at this point, but there are still shoppers out there who prefer the maneuverability of a car. That's what makes the 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country such an intriguing option. The Cross Country offers SUV-grade off-road ability, including skid plates and 7.9 inches of ground clearance, but it also offers the responsive handling of a regular V60 wagon. It has plenty of power, too, thanks to a standard turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. If you're not sold on a high-riding crossover for your next all-wheel-drive vehicle, the V60 Cross Country deserves a close look.

What's New for 2015?

The off-road-ready 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country is an all-new model based on the regular V60 wagon.

What We Like

Genuine trail capabilities; peppy turbocharged acceleration; eye-catching style; comfy front seats; standard all-wheel drive

What We Don't

Tight back seat; subpar cargo capacity

How Much?

$41,940-$45,590

Fuel Economy

The all-wheel-drive V60 Cross Country is powered by a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder turbocharged engine that's rated at 250 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission handles the shifting.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the V60 Cross Country achieves 20 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, a so-so performance for what is essentially a compact station wagon.

Standard Features & Options

The V60 Cross Country is offered in base and Platinum trim levels.

The base V60 Cross Country ($41,940) includes features such as 18-in wheels, an SUV-like 7.9 in of ground clearance, a sunroof, LED running lights, black fender extensions for a tougher look, front and rear skid plates, rear parking sensors, power front seats, driver memory functions, leather upholstery, the Volvo Sensus Connect infotainment system with a 7-in color display and telematics (including mobile Wi-Fi), a navigation system, smartphone integration (including the Volvo On Call app with remote car control), Bluetooth, an 8-speaker audio system with USB connectivity, and satellite and HD radio.

The V60 Cross Country Platinum ($45,590) adds active xenon headlights with washers, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, the Convenience Package (including power-folding mirrors, keyless entry/start, a rearview camera and a universal garage door opener) and the Technology Package (including adaptive cruise control, a collision-mitigation system with automatic braking, a driver drowsiness monitor, lane departure warning and active high beams).

The Convenience Package and Technology Package are optional on the base V60 Cross Country. The optional Climate Package adds heated front and rear seats, a heated windshield, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield-washer nozzles and an interior air quality system. The Blind Spot Information System package includes a blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, front parking sensors and lane-change assist.

Standalone options include piano black inlays, dual outboard 2-stage child booster seats and a dual-screen rear entertainment system.

Safety

As expected of Volvo, the V60 Cross Country is very safety-conscious. Standard features include active front head restraints, anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control with torque vectoring, and six airbags (front, front-side and side-curtain). As noted above, the Technology Package adds numerous electronic safety technologies.

Although the Cross Country itself hasn't been crash-tested, the regular V60 on which it's based received the top score of Good from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in every tested category.

Behind the Wheel

In typical Scandinavian fashion, the V60 Cross Country's interior is crisp and clean, with designer touches, such as Volvo's "floating" center stack, that set it apart from mainstream luxury models. The quality of materials is very good, and the restrained dashboard styling lends an air of sophistication. Seat comfort is stellar up front, though rear passengers may find legroom to be limited. Cargo capacity is a lowlight for the V60 Cross Country, maxing out at just 43.8 cu ft. -- that's less than the compact VW Golf hatchback.

On the road, the V60 Cross Country has ample turbocharged power for passing and merging. The 6-speed automatic is an older transmission, but it does its job well enough, only showing its age when really asked to hustle. In corners, there's naturally a bit more body roll than in a regular V60 due to the Cross Country's increased ride height, but it's apparent that this Volvo's road manners are fundamentally solid. Ride comfort is exemplary on most surfaces, and not much ambient noise makes it into the Cross Country's cabin at speed.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Audi allroad -- The allroad is similar to the V60 Cross Country and offers tighter handling, though it lacks the Volvo's straight-line performance.

2015 Subaru Outback -- The larger Outback may feel unwieldy after a spin in the V60 Cross Country, but it's a no-brainer if you want to maximize your cargo space.

2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen -- The new Golf SportWagen isn't offered with all-wheel drive yet, but if you don't need the V60 Cross Country's skid plates, jacked-up suspension and all that, the Volkswagen is worth a shot.

Used Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon -- The E-Class wagon is a bit bigger than the Volvo, but it's also a lot nicer, and you can find one with 4MATIC all-wheel drive at a great certified pre-owned price.

Autotrader's Advice

The V60 Cross Country Platinum is our pick. We think it has enough desirable features to justify the nearly $4,000 price premium over the base model.
