Ford SUVs have remained popular thanks to their family-friendly features, solid engines and good gas mileage, so it's no surprise the 2017 Ford Escape has all that going for it and more.

The Escape's recent facelift gives it a more upscale look, like its larger cousin, the Ford Edge. This compact crossover is offered in three trim levels with three different engines -- and all but the base model is available with AWD. We're checking out a fully loaded 4WD Titanium model ($39,010). The Escape's excellent fuel economy is partly due to Ford's EcoBoost turbocharged engines and their quiet auto start/stop function -- similar to on hybrid vehicles. When the Escape comes to a stop, the engine shuts off and then automatically restarts when you take your foot off the brake.

Compared to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Escape is fun to drive, with a quite a bit of power and sharp, responsive handling -- but they're all very similar vehicles.

While some of the interior materials may not feel all that luxurious given the price tag, the Escape's layout is well designed. Everything's within easy reach, and the new media bin with the USB charger is a nice addition. You can pop tablets in there with no problem. Upgrade to higher trims for more upscale features like heated seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and an optional panoramic sunroof, which makes the Escape feel even more spacious. The 60/40-split rear seats recline and fold down flat, so you've got plenty of room for flea-market finds or a road trip with friends.

And there's also an optional hands-free power lift gate that you'll enjoy on a daily basis.

If tech is your thing, you're going to like the 2017 Escape. The user-friendly SYNC 3 with enhanced voice recognition and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration make it easy to stay connected and entertained.

Ford has also introduced a new level of remote access to the car with the available SYNC Connect and new FordPass app. You can book a maintenance visit with your dealer, find and pay for parking, or set a time for your car to start remotely every day.

If you have young drivers, you'll also like Ford MyKey, which lets you set limits on speed, stereo volume and gossiping. Okay, that last one, not so much...but you get the idea. As for safety, the Escape has received excellent government crash-test ratings and also features an impressive list of active assist features.

And when you're running errands around town, the enhanced park assist is a big help with tight spaces and crowded parking lots.

All said, the 2017 Ford Escape is likely a smart choice if you want a really safe, tech-savvy SUV that's as functional as it is fun to drive.
