Nissan Frontier Diesel Runner Concept: Chicago Auto Show – Video

Big auto shows are known for outlandish concept cars and over-the-top presentations. But this year, Nissan brought a little reality to the stage at the Chicago Auto Show. They showed off a new concept, but this time it’s a more like a real car than some futuristic hot rod. The Nissan Frontier Diesel Runner is essentially a showroom-fresh 2014 Frontier with some splashy graphics and a jazzed-up interior.

So What’s the Concept?

The real "concept" part of the truck is under the hood; in this case, Nissan calls it a Technical Study. That’s just industry jargon for "let’s see if this will actually work."

The diesel power comes from a Cummins turbodiesel 2.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. Nissan says they expect roughly a 35 percent increase in fuel economy, which could mean as much as 30 miles per gallon on the highway. There’s also more torque, which means extra power sooner, which is good for towing and hauling.

So Will They Build It?

Nissan says they’re going to gauge the public’s interest in a diesel-powered Frontier. If enough people say they’d buy one, Nissan may build a diesel-powered Frontier pickup. That should work out well for shoppers, since we think there will be an all-new 2015 Nissan Frontier sometime next year.
