You might be wondering why I’d pick a Porsche Macan GTS to cruise around Brooklyn, the largest borough in New York City. Yes, it’s bigger than Manhattan!
First, it’s expensive and small — pretty much like all Brooklyn apartments — but it’s easy to street-park. No way am I paying $400/month for a parking space!
Second, it’s got street cred. The name, the style, the presence… 20-inch wheels, red brake calipers, lower ride height … this thing really turns heads.
Third, it’s athletic. In Brooklyn, we walk pretty much everywhere, usually hauling groceries or a kid/stroller/backpack/coffee combo while running down the stairs to catch the train. We’re in pretty good shape, and so is this Porsche.
The proof is under the hood. There’s a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 giving you 360 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission taking us to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. And where will we be taking all that power? The park, of course.
Specifically, Prospect Park. It was built by the same guys who did Central Park, but about 10 years later. It’s essentially Central Park 2.0, and today about eight million people a year use it.
Next, we’re heading to one of my favorite breakfast spots, called Rita. It’s in Red Hook, one of 77 neighborhoods in Brooklyn — but this one doesn’t really have any subway stops, so having a car is really nice.
On the way to Rita, I realized one thing I really love about the Porsche Macan GTS — it just feels really well screwed-together, and the handling is nice and tight. But let’s get something out of the way … there are way too many buttons inside.
So that’s Brooklyn in the Macan. I have to say, I’m impressed with the Macan GTS. I thought it would be a compromise from the Cayenne, which I really like, but it’s not. It’s really its own car. Sure, it’s pricey, but so is Brooklyn — and every day I live here, I feel lucky to be in such a vibrant community.
