There’s no way around it; the Toyota Tacoma is the go-to when it comes to less-than-full-size pickups. The numbers don’t lie. Travel to any town in the United States, and it seems like you can’t throw a rock without hitting a Tacoma of some kind. More than 237,000 Tacoma trucks found their way into the garages of a new owner in 2023. That means the Tacoma dominates the midsize truck landscape. The next closest competitor in terms of sales volume is the Chevy Colorado. Chevrolet doesn’t sell half as many Colorado pickups as Toyota sells the Tacoma. When combining the GMC Canyon‘s sales volume with the Colorado’s, the Tacoma still more than doubles the number of midsize twins sold by General Motors. With that in mind, here are my favorite Tacoma features:

<h4>TRD Pro</h4>

The hybrid powertrain with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine delivers up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Fox Shocks and a revolutionary IsoDynamic seating system let you off-road all day without feeling beat up. The abbreviated front bumper, which allows for a more aggressive approach angle, is also cool. It’s one of those simple things that has a practical, real-world application. That’s kind of a Toyota hallmark. Also, the standard integrated light bar is the exact kind of thing I’d expect from Toyota. LED fog lights and aluminum front skid plates are just a few of the TRD Pro features that put the Tacoma ahead of other midsize pickups.

<h4>Resale Value</h4>

Toyota is impressive when it comes to resale value overall. The Tacoma is No. 2 in a list of top value retainers. According to Kelley Blue Book, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is expected to retain 62.6% of its original value. That means it has the best resale value of any midsize pickup. Of all vehicle types, only the Ford Bronco tops the Tacoma in terms of resale value, retaining 66.7% of its original value. Of the top 10 best-performing vehicles in resale value, Toyota vehicles occupy five places.

<h4>Longevity</h4>

Toyota stuck with the Tacoma for decades. First, it was the Hilux, the simple “truck,” and then, in 1995, it became the Tacoma. Other automakers gave up on their small trucks. Ford dropped the Courier, then the Ranger, and then brought it back as a midsize truck. Chevrolet canceled the LUV (Light Utility Vehicle) and the S-10 Pickup before launching the Colorado. I like that Toyota stuck with the Tacoma all these years. When I see a company do that (similar to how Jeep has stuck with the Wrangler), it gives me confidence in their product.

<h4>Decent Price</h4>

The top-of-the-line TRD Pro is pricey. Before options, it can be $65,000. The TRD Off-Road I drove had a base price of $44,000 and came in just under $55,000 with a list of substantial upgrades. However, a base 2024 Toyota Tacoma SR starts at $32,995, including the $1,495 destination charge.

<h4>Interior Quality</h4>

I have been unimpressed by the interiors of past Tacoma models, but the latest Tacoma is a significant upgrade. The available 14-inch touchscreen is impressive (maybe even too big?). There is a good deal of plastic bits around the cabin, but the overall vibe comes off as more rugged rather than low-budget. The shapes, angles, textures, and materials all work well with Tacoma’s utilitarian mission.
