However, with an additional five inches of legroom in the third row, the Grand Highlander can comfortably accommodate two 6-foot adults. The Grand Highlander also has a larger cargo bay, even with the third-row seat in place. To avoid cannibalizing sales from the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/toyota/highlander">Toyota Highlander</a>, the entry-level Grand Highlander bypasses the LE trim and goes straight to XLE, a move that adds about $4,000 to the price. The Grand Highlander's strong resale values mean you won't save a bundle buying used, but there may be more wiggle room to bargain.

Competition for larger, roomier SUVs is heating up, but many buyers still shun the idea of moving to a full-size model like the Chevy Suburban or Toyota Sequoia. For these customers, Toyota builds the Grand Highlander, a less bulky family chariot with a solid pedigree backed by outstanding safety and reliability ratings. It’s big enough to comfortably hold up to eight people yet still fits in the average garage. Powering the Grand Highlander is a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with plenty of pep and fuel economy figures in the mid-20 mpg range. While not as smooth or quiet as the old V6 from previous Highlanders, the turbo has no problem pulling a loaded Grand Highlander. If you’re seeking more power and better city fuel economy, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max provides both, although it's only available in the more expensive Limited and Platinum trims. With 365 horsepower on tap, this is the best option for those who plan on towing. Finally, there’s the Grand Highlander Hybrid, powered by a less potent hybrid engine setup offered only in the XLE and Limited. When equipped with this engine, owners can expect to see fuel economy figures of 37 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. Given that the hybrid isn’t all the much more expensive than its gas-only equivalent, we think it’s the best choice.

So, is there any sacrifice choosing the Grand Highlander over a larger SUV or nearest rival? Unless you need truck-like towing muscle, we're hard-pressed to think of one. The standard equipment list is generous, with a full roster of safety and driver-assist systems like adaptive cruise control, auto high-beam headlights, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. The standard infotainment setup consists of a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and amenities range from a height-adjustable power liftgate to 3-zone climate control and even a wireless charging pad. Available equipment varies by trim and includes a foot-activated power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic moonroof, a 360-degree surround vision camera, heated and ventilated front seats, and a magnificent JBL audio system. At the top end, the Platinum offers more luxury, backed by such high-tech goodies as a rearview camera mirror, a head-up display, and Traffic Jam Assist, which can brake, steer, and accelerate without driver intervention at speeds up to 25 mph.
