Mercedes-Benz released the heavier, longer, and wider third-generation SL-Class to the U.S. in 1971, now with a V-8. The 450SL was powered by a 4.5-liter V-8 paired to a three-speed automatic and now also comes in a 4-seat coupe model called the 450SLC. The more powerful and quicker 500SL and 500SLC were not officially exported to the U.S. market. The less powerful 380SL replaced the 450SL from 1981-1985. Then from 1986-1989 the U.S. received the 5.6-liter V-8 powered 560SL that was mated to a new four-speed automatic. This generation was in production for a lengthy 18 years and over a quarter of a million were purchased around the world.
