For sale right now on AutoTrader is a Bentley Arnage Red Label that once belonged to NBA player Ruben Patterson.

Patterson was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1998 but started his professional career with AEK Athens B.C. in Greece because of the NBA lockout that year. Over the years, Patterson made a name for himself as a strong defensive player, claiming the nickname Kobe Stopper for his self-proclaimed defensive ability against Kobe Bryant.

Patterson played for eight professional teams in his 11-year career, but he spent most of his time with the Portland Trail Blazers. Patterson finished his pro basketball life the way it started, overseas. The last team he played for was Champville SC in the Lebanese Basketball League.

Patterson's Bentley is one of the sought-after Red Label models. The red B on the Arnage hood ornament harks back to a day when red labels were used to differentiate sporty models from the more luxurious ones.

The actual reasoning behind the modern rebirth of the red label has a lot more to do with politics and inter-industry competition than heritage. When the Arnage design was still fresh on the drawing board, the Bentley brand was up for sale. Volkswagen and BMW both put in bids to take control of the legendary marque.

VW had the winning bid, but that presented another problem. BMW had been a supplier for the Bentley brand for years, and now it found itself supplying engines to its rival. Similarly, VW wasn't keen on the idea of using BMW parts in its new top-of-the-line cars, so the company came up with a different strategy.

VW reintroduced a Bentley classic, the 6.75-liter V8 engine, which had been around in one form or another since 1959. With some modernizing tweaks, the old engine was cleaned up enough to meet stringent European emissions requirements. Cars that received the classic powerplant were given the red labels to differentiate them from BMW-powered cars.

The engine did not disappoint. Not only did it deliver a classic Bentley driving feel, but the Arnage Red Label became the most powerful four-door sedan on the market with 616 lb-ft of torque (200 lb-ft more than a contemporary BMW M5).

The basketball star's Bentley isn't listed with a price, but Dani Kanj of Everett Auto Gallery says he is looking to sell the car for about $49,000, which compares pretty well with other Bentleys currently on the market.
