  • Both offer a top twin-turbo V6 model.
  • Genesis G70 comes with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Base price: $43,495 / Choose the right trim for your 2022 Audi A5

What we like: Standard all-wheel drive; numerous body styles; high-performance S and RS models.

What we would change: Tight rear seats in coupe and convertible; very expensive for top trims; no hybrid option.

Overview: Offering buyers many choices, the 2022 Audi A5 is available as a coupe, convertible, or hatchback (Sportback in Audi-speak), with a choice of engines. Every A5 comes with Audi’s signature all-wheel drive, and driving is composed and smooth. If you prefer performance, the S5 and RS5 trims are considerably more potent, with sport suspensions and a top 444-horsepower twin-turbo V6 in the RS5. The interior is welcoming, comfortable, and beautifully made, with fine and soft materials throughout. The seats are comfortable, although the rears are a bit tight in both the coupe and convertible. If cargo space is important, the Sportback is the one to get, with 35 cubic feet and split-folding rear seats. All models are well equipped, and there are lots of expensive options to be had as well. Safety features are abundant, although only the Sportback has been rated by NHTSA, earning five stars.

What’s new for 2022: Other than some shuffling of options, changes to the A5 for 2022 are relatively light. The Black Optic package is now available on the A5 Sportback, the S line package now includes a sport suspension, and the S5 gets 19-inch wheels and carbon-fiber trim on the inside.

Features and technology: With standard all-wheel drive, the 2022 Audi A5 is offered with a choice of engines. There are two 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinders in different levels of tune, a 3.0-liter turbo V6 and a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6. Both four-cylinders use a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT), with the V6s using an 8-speed automatic.

Standard features vary somewhat depending on body style, but the base equipment includes LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and leather everywhere. Infotainment comes via a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, two USB ports, and a 10-speaker audio system. Driver-assistance and safety features include lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

The cabriolet has a power-operated fabric top with rollover protection. The S5 models have leather and Alcantara upholstery, and the top RS5 trim vehicles include a 755-watt/19-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system.

What does the future hold: True four-seat convertibles are a bit of a rarity, so we would love if the A5 cabriolet had more rear-seat room for passengers. And given the preponderance of electric propulsion these days, we also think Audi should include some form of hybrid power as well. See 2022 Audi A5 models for sale near you

2022 Genesis G70

Base price: $38,570 | Choose the right trim for your 2022 Genesis G70

What we like: Handsome looks; good handling; choice of engines; rear- or all-wheel drive.

What we would change: Add hybrid option; blind-spot monitor should come standard; lacks luxury brand cachet.

Overview: Updated and refreshed for 2022, the Genesis G70 continues to prove itself in the midsize sport sedan world. Power comes from a 252-hp 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, with a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 available as well. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is an option. Steering is sharp, and the suspension is tuned for sporty driving. The interior is luxurious and tasteful, with comfortable and supportive seats, and both an 8-inch digital gauge cluster and a new 10.25-inch infotainment screen with navigation are standard. Active safety features include forward-collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring, and a semi-autonomous driving system. Options include an upgrade Lexicon audio system. Genesis doesn’t yet have the name recognition of its German and Japanese competitors, but it’s improving. Resale values are expected to be strong.

What’s new for 2022: Refreshed for 2022, the front and rear have been revised, with the Sport model getting a new grille and revised headlights and taillights. There’s a new 10.25-inch screen that now includes standard navigation as well as a digital instrument panel. There’s a new center airbag on the safety front, and the 3.3T turbo model gets a variable exhaust.

Features and technology: With a choice of turbocharged engines, the 2022 Genesis G70 comes standard with rear-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is optional. Standard features include leatherette upholstery, 18-inch wheels, an 8-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.25-inch navigation screen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims bring 19-inch wheels, leather, a sunroof, wireless phone charging, and a Lexicon premium audio system.

Equipped with the twin-turbo V6, the 3.3T Sport adds a sport suspension, Brembo brakes, dual exhausts, and 19-inch wheels. The higher trim of this includes a variable exhaust valve, a sunroof, and dark chrome.

The top trim Sport Prestige adds a head-up display, Nappa interior leather, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and electronically controlled suspension. All models include three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance, valet care, Connected Services, and lifetime traffic data.

What does the future hold: Given a refresh for 2022, we don’t expect much more than added paint colors, a shuffling of features, and more safety equipment as it becomes available. We would also like to see an optional hybrid. See 2022 Genesis G70 models for sale near you
