What We Don't
The smart fortwo is all-new for the 2016 model year. It's been fully redesigned from the ground up, but retains its microcar proportions albeit a bit wider than the outgoing model. It has a new 3-cylinder engine, better sound deadening, an improved automatic transmission and new standard equipment to give it greater appeal than the car it's replacing. The fortwo electric drive is carried over from the previous generation for 2016.See the 2016 smart fortwo models for sale near you
First, we'd think long and hard about whether your parking situation is really that limited. Otherwise, it's just really hard to make a case for the fortwo considering the more practical competition. But if you must, we like the passion's extra equipment and colorful interior trim choices.Find a smart fortwo for sale
The 2-seat smart fortwo is available in gas and electric variants with the electric version being carried over from the previous generation. For 2016, all fortwo models are coupes and a new cabriolet along with a new electric model will be out for 2017. The gas version is available in pure, passion, prime and proxy trim levels and the electric drive model is only available in the passion trim.
The base pure ($14,650) trim comes standard with 15-in steel wheels, cruise control, power locks and windows, automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a USB port, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and a 2-speaker sound system.
The passion ($16,140) adds alloy wheels, a height-adjustable driver's seat, power heated mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, upgraded interior trim, and a cargo cover. These items are available on the pure as standalone options.
The prime ($17,490) adds a panoramic sunroof, automatic headlights and wipers, LED running/accent lights, fog lamps, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Options include a JBL sound system and a Sport package (16-in wheels, a lowered suspension, a chrome exhaust tip and shift paddles for the obligatory auto-manual transmission). Apart from the leather, these items are optional on the passion.
The proxy ($18,480) adds the Sport package, special upholstery and interior trim consisting of blue cloth and white faux-leather, ambient lighting, and the JBL premium audio system.
The electric drive passion ($25,000) includes power locks, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, power windows, power mirrors, a driver's armrest, and a stereo with an auxiliary jack and a USB port.

2016 Honda Fit -- For roughly the same price as the smart, you can get a car that's vastly more spacious, more efficient, better-equipped, more comfortable, more powerful, better suited to the highway and cheaper to maintain. Ironically, it can't fit in as many tight parking spots.
2016 Fiat 500 -- It's been a while since it's undergone a redesign, but the 500 offers small proportions, more interior space than the smart and a quirky retro character. It's also available as the electric 500e.
2016 Chevrolet Spark -- The little Spark offers four doors and more equipment for your money compared to the fortwo, but it can't match the smart's more premium vibe and funky styling. It too can be had as an EV.
Used Mini Cooper -- The Mini Cooper may not be as parking-friendly as the smart, but good grief, what type of shoebox are you parking in? This is by far the premium subcompact to get, but given its heftier price tag and questionable reliability, it may be necessary to consider a certified pre-owned Mini.
