9 Good Used Cars Under $10,000 for 2020

Automobile reliability and design have become pretty good over the last decade, and as a result, it’s possible to find a great used sedan, hatchback or SUV — even if you’re on a tight budget. Here are nine of our favorite used cars under $10,000. While it’s still worth having any used car checked by a knowledgeable, independent mechanic before you agree to buy, each of the vehicles on this list should be pretty dependable, even once it’s got some miles on the odometer.

2010-2014 Subaru Outback

2010-2014 Subaru Outback

The Outback is a staple among buyers who like to, well, do stuff. With standard all-wheel drive, a large cargo area and standard roof rails that cleverly hide cross bars (which can be deployed when needed), the Outback offers a lot of versatility. There’s also its SUV-like ride height. Most buyers probably don’t realize that the Outback offers just as much ground clearance as a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Buyers looking for a $10,000 Outback should look to the 2010-2014 model years, of which around 750 are currently listed on Autotrader for $10K or less. The Outback was offered with two different engines over these model years; an efficient 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and a more powerful 3.6-liter V6. Of all of the Outbacks listed that fit our bill, just around 60 come with the V6. Find a Subaru Outback for sale

2009-2015 Honda Pilot

2009-2015 Honda Pilot

Serving as a great minivan substitute, the second-generation Honda Pilot — sold from 2009-2015 — offers room for up to eight people, loads of cargo capacity and decent highway fuel economy of up to 25 miles per gallon. That’s not bad when you consider its 3.5-liter V6 that makes 250 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. On top of all that, the second-gen Pilot wears a boxy design that has actually aged pretty well over the years. Buyers with a budget of around $10,000 or less currently have over 500 second-gen Pilots to choose from on Autotrader that are in this price range. If AWD is mandatory for you, be sure to filter out front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive listings from your search. Find a Honda Pilot for sale

2015-2018 Honda Fit

2015-2018 Honda Fit

While the Pilot is an excellent family vehicle, the Honda Fit falls on the other end of the spectrum: It’s a small, nimble, subcompact hatchback that’s great for urban settings. In addition to its space-efficient design and decently fun driving dynamics, the Fit offers a surprisingly nice interior, which is better than can be said for most of its competitors in this segment. One of its most clever features is a front passenger seat that folds flat, allowing you to carry skis, beach umbrellas and other long items inside the cabin that otherwise wouldn’t fit. Early examples of the third-generation Fit, which went on sale for the 2015 model year, have now depreciated down into the $10,000 range, and there are currently close to 200 listed for sale on Autotrader that fit the bill. Find a  Honda Fit for sale

2012-2015 Toyota Prius

One of the most efficient used cars under $10,000 is the Toyota Prius, which is all about fuel economy. With an Environmental Protection Agency rating of 48 mpg in combined driving, the third-generation Prius makes an excellent choice for the budget-minded consumer, especially given that many examples have now depreciated down to our price range. There are currently around 500 listed for sale on Autotrader for around $10,000 or less. Buyers wanting something a little different are in luck, too, as during this era, there were two other Prius models offered. The Prius V offers a taller roof with additional cargo space, and there are over 150 listed that fall within our price range. The Prius C is a smaller, subcompact option that just went out of production in 2019, and there are currently over 200 listed for sale on Autotrader that fall within our budget. Find a Toyota Prius for sale

2014-2018 Mazda3 Hatchback

2014-2018 Mazda3 Hatchback

Mazda has a reputation for offering an elevated driving experience and a nicer interior than most competitors, and the third-generation Mazda3 is no exception. Sold during the 2014 through 2018 model years, the third-gen 3 is available in both sedan and hatchback bodystyles. We recommend the hatch for its added practicality. The most luxurious third-gen Mazda3 models were offered during the later of these model years, but you’ll still likely be surprised by the level of refinement you get with older models too. Right now on Autotrader, there are currently close to 400 2014-2018 Mazda3 models listed for around $10K or less, and around 100 of those are hatchbacks. Find a Mazda3 for sale

2006-2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata

2006-2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The Mazda Miata — known for its roadster bodystyle, nimble handling and usable power — has now been offered in four generations since it debuted in the late 1980s. The third-generation Miata, known as the NC, was sold over the 2015-2016 model years and is currently the best overall value when it comes to used Miatas. While it was the heaviest of the roadster’s four generations, the NC still offers a simple, exciting driving experience that you don’t get from many other vehicles. Right now on Autotrader, there are almost 200 third-gen Miatas listed for close to $10,000 or less. While both an automatic and manual transmission were offered, we strongly encourage you to go with the manual, of which there are about 80 to choose from that fit within our budget. Find a Mazda MX-5 Miata for sale

2013-2015 Honda Accord

2013-2015 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord offers a good array of standard features, a spacious cabin, great attention to detail and great ride and handling characteristics. As one of the top-selling vehicles in America for decades, it’s hard to go wrong with a used Accord. Buyers looking for a used Accord for around $10,000 should look to examples from the 2013-2015 model years. During this era, the Accord was offered with either a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. Most came with a continuously variable automatic transmission, although a 6-speed manual was offered on certain configurations. Right now on Autotrader, there are over 1,000 2008-2012 Honda Accords listed for $10,000 or less. A coupe body style was offered during these years as well, and buyers have 400 to choose from for around $10K. Find a Honda Accord for sale

2005-2015 Nissan XTerra

2005-2015 Nissan XTerra

This is the most rugged vehicle on our list. The XTerra is a body-on-frame SUV based on the same platform as the venerable Nissan Frontier pickup, and it counted the Toyota 4Runner as its closest competitor during its time on sale. Oddly, Nissan opted to discontinue the XTerra back in 2015, despite the segment experiencing a resurgence in popularity in recent years. As a result of their orphan status though, used XTerras present a good value. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter V6 that puts out 265 hp. Transmission options were a 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual — something you can’t get on the 4Runner. On Autotrader, there are currently over 600 XTerras listed for around $10,000 or less. What’s most surprising is that the vast majority — close to 500 — are second-generation models, sold from 2005 all the way up to the XTerra’s discontinuation in 2015. Take note though — the XTerra was offered with 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive. If you’re buying a used XTerra in 2020, it should be because you absolutely need four-wheel drive. The good news is that, after you filter out 2WD options, you’ve still got over 250 2005-and-newer XTerras to choose from. Find a Nissan XTerra for sale

2006-2012 Toyota RAV4

2006-2012 Toyota RAV4

As one of the most popular SUVs on the market throughout the 2000s and 2010s, the Toyota RAV4 offers space, safety, comfort, efficiency, reliability — you name it. Buyers looking for a $10,000 RAV4 will want to target examples from the RAV4’s third-generation, which was offered from the 2006-2012 model years. Right now on Autotrader, there are currently over 1,000 2006-2012 RAV4s to choose from with an asking price of $10,000 or less. While no hybrid option was offered during these years, there was an available V6 that made 270 hp, which is a ridiculous amount of power for a humble compact SUV. Buyers interested in the V6 and AWD have 170 2006-2012 RAV4s to choose from that fit this budget. Find a Toyota RAV4 for sale
