Great Used Toyotas Under $20,000 for 2020

Toyota is known for building some of the toughest, most reliable vehicles on earth. With loads of different options, from the beloved Camry to the efficient Prius to the rough and rugged Tacoma and 4Runner, Toyota has something to offer just about anyone. Below, we’ll outline seven used Toyotas that are great for a budget of around $20,000 or less.

2017-2019 Toyota Corolla

2017-2019 Toyota Corolla

One of the most economical vehicles in Toyota’s lineup, the compact Corolla is sensible, efficient and reliable and offers some great safety tech that you typically wouldn’t expect from an affordable used compact car. Starting with the 2017 model year, the Corolla gained active safety features like automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control, automatic high beams and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. You’ll also probably be surprised to find that the Corolla from this era offers very similar interior dimensions to the current-generation Camry, which competes a full segment up in the midsize class. On top of all that, any Corolla you buy should return over 30 miles per gallon in combined driving. Altogether, if you want a simple vehicle to get around town in, it’s hard to beat the venerable Corolla. Right now there are currently over 1,000 2017-2018 examples listed for sale on Autotrader for under $20,000, many of which come in at $15,000 or less. Find a Toyota Corolla for sale

2016-2018 Toyota Prius

2016-2018 Toyota Prius

If it’s fuel efficiency you’re after, the first Toyota vehicle that probably comes to mind is the Prius. Given just how popular Toyota’s fuel-sipping compact hybrid is, there are currently thousands of 2016-2018 models to choose from on Autotrader for a budget of $20,000 or less. Rest assured that any one offers exceptional fuel economy of around 52 miles per gallon combined. Many of these will also offer Toyota’s suite of active safety features known as Toyota Safety Sense. As with the Corolla, RAV4, Camry and other vehicles in Toyota’s lineup, a TSS-equipped Prius will come with automatic emergency braking, radar cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams and other helpful tech. Need room for more stuff? Look to the slightly older Prius V. While it isn’t as modern as the current-generation Prius, it does offer a tall greenhouse with more cargo space. Find a Toyota Prius for sale

2018-2019 Toyota Camry

2018-2019 Toyota Camry

The Camry has been the best-selling midsize sedan in the United States for a long time, and it isn’t hard to understand why. Like the other vehicles on this list, it offers great reliability, relatively good efficiency and smart, conservative design. Given that midsize sedans have dropped in popularity recently, it isn’t hard to find a relatively new Camry at our desired price point, and there are currently over 1,000 current-generation models from the 2018 and 2019 model years listed on Autotrader for around $20,000 or less. Most of these are 4-cylinder models, which still come well-equipped. If it’s a V6 or hybrid Camry you’re after, you’ll want to refocus your search examples from the 2015-2017 model years. Find a Toyota Camry for sale

2016-2018 Toyota RAV4

2016-2018 Toyota RAV4

As far as used Toyotas go, it’s hard to beat the RAV4. For the past few years now, the compact RAV4 has been the best-selling passenger vehicle in the United States. It earned the crown back in 2018 when it was in its fourth generation, and well-equipped fourth-gen examples can now be found for around $20,000 pretty easily. Sold from the 2013 to 2018 model years and updated for 2016, the fourth-gen RAV4 was offered as a hybrid from 2016 to 2018 as well. For just a small price premium over non-hybrid models, the RAV4 hybrid returns 34 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, which is a respectable figure for a compact SUV at this price point. Right now on Autotrader, there are over 1,000 2016-2018 RAV4s listed for around $20,000 or less. Find a Toyota RAV4 for sale

2014-2015 Toyota Highlander

2014-2015 Toyota Highlander

The third-generation Toyota Highlander is an exceptional three-row crossover SUV that offers Toyota reliability and room for up to eight passengers. A great minivan substitute, the Highlander offers all-wheel drive and three different available powertrains. Buyers can choose from a regular four-cylinder or V6 or a hybrid V6 that returns a respectable 28 mpg overall while also putting out 245 horsepower. There are currently a little over 700 2014-2017 Toyota Highlanders listed for sale on Autotrader for around $20,000 or less. Of these, the vast majority even come with the more powerful V6 engine, although the hybrid seems pretty tough to come by at this price point. No matter which you choose, any Highlander you buy at this price point will make for a great, reliable family hauler. Find a Toyota Highlander for sale

2009-2018 Toyota Tacoma

2009-2018 Toyota Tacoma

The midsize Toyota Tacoma is known for holding its value exceptionally well, thanks to its reputation for industry-leading reliability. As a result, it’s hard to find a used Tacoma for under $20,000 without going back a few years. For example, right now on Autotrader, there are only around 300 2016-or-newer Tacomas listed for around $20,000 or less, many of which are lower-spec two-wheel drive models. Focus your search on 2009 to 2015 models, and your options grow to over 1,000. That said, the Tacoma is offered in a number of configurations. If you filter to show only V6-powered models with 4-wheel drive, the number of options from the 2009-2015 model years still shrinks significantly. Either way, if you’re looking for an affordable midsize pickup, a little patience toward finding a Tacoma can go a long way, as the Tacoma has been the segment leader for over a decade now. Find a Toyota Tacoma for sale

2007-2013 Toyota Tundra

2007-2013 Toyota Tundra

If you need something bigger than the Tacoma, look to the Tundra. A full-size truck, the Tundra competes with the likes of the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500 and Nissan Titan. The Tundra has been on sale in its current form for 14 years now, meaning that while a brand-new one feels pretty old inside, a well-used early model feels pretty similar to a brand-new one. For around $20,000, we recommend targeting a Tundra from the 2007-2013 model years, and buyers currently have over 1,000 to choose from on Autotrader. Filter to show only examples equipped with the potent 5.7-liter V8 and 4WD, and this figure shrinks to about 500, which still gives you plenty to choose from. Find a Toyota Tundra for sale
