The all-electric Nissan Leaf is one of the best selling plug-in electric vehicles of all time, only surpassed by the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/tesla/model-3" target="_blank">Tesla Model-3</a> in terms of total units sold. First arriving in showrooms for the the model year <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/2011/nissan/leaf" target="_blank">2011</a>, the Leaf sold so well due to its affordable and budget friendly pricing, allowing it to compete for new car sales among EV and non-EV vehicles. Initially the Leaf had a modest driving range of only 73 miles but Nissan's engineering team gradually increased the vehicle's total drive range slowly over the following years. The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/2017/nissan/leaf" target="_blank">2017 model year</a> has a 107 mile range, the 2018-2019 models have a range around 150 miles but by <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/2021/nissan/leaf" target="_blank">2021</a> the Leaf's <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/nissan/leaf/s-plus" target="_blank">S Plus</a>, <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/nissan/leaf/sv-plus" target="_blank">SV Plus</a>, and <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/nissan/leaf/sl-plus" target="_blank">SL Plus</a> top-end trims were able to travel up to 226 miles on a single charge mostly thanks to a 160-kW motor and 62-kWh battery powertrain. As the Leaf faced increased competition in the EV-space by competitors such as the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/electric/hyundai/kona" target="_blank">Hyundai Kona Electric</a>, <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/electric/kia/niro" target="_blank">Kia Niro EV</a>, and <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/chevrolet/bolt" target="_blank">Chevrolet Bolt</a>, Nissan had to offer more safety, tech, and convenience features resulting in the Leaf's increased sticker price. The first generation was from the 2011 - 2017 model years, and the second generation started with the 2018 model year. For the 2021 model year, Nissan introduced a mobile app allowing you to control vehicle charging remotely and pre-cool or pre-heat the car as long it is connected to a charger. Charging can be done via either a 120-volt or preferably a 220 - 240-volt outlet. The Leaf has consistently received 5-stars for safety by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as the car comes with a variety of safety systems and driver assistance technologies. With Nissan's excellent reliability track record, the Leaf is a strong contender and if you're thinking about buying a used electric car, the Leaf should be on your short list.
