While most vehicles become more powerful over time, the Fox Body Mustang lost some performance during the 1980 and 1981 model years due to the energy crisis. The smaller 4.2-liter V8 engine makes roughly 20 less horsepower and 50 lb-ft of torque than the 5.0-liter V8 found in the 1979 Mustang. Power output rose during later model years, and the 5.0-liter V8 high-output version made 225 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque at its peak.

The Fox Body Mustang is available in coupe (notchback), convertible, and hatchback body styles. The upgraded engine makes 235 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The SVT Cobra is still reasonably quick, even by modern standards, with a 0 – 60 time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph.

Upgrading the driveline components was necessary to handle the extra power, and modifications included the clutch, gearbox, and driveshaft.
