Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Program

Overview

If you’re interested in a used Mercedes-Benz, you may want to consider the Mercedes-Benz certified pre-owned program CPO). It offers additional bumper-to-bumper limited warranty coverage with no deductible, giving you serious peace of mind and potentially saving you money, should something break.

What We Like

Special financing rates; no mileage limit; full transferability; no deductible

What We Don’t

Short coverage term; adding additional coverage costs extra; no longer-term powertrain coverage; limited added-value perks

Program Specifics

The most important selling point of the Mercedes-Benz CPO program is the warranty, which offers one year of limited coverage with no mileage cap from the day you buy your certified pre-owned car. This additional 12 months becomes effective once the 4-years or 50,000 miles terms of the original new-car warranty expire. If the original new-car warranty is expired, the CPO warranty kicks in on the sale date of the pre-owned vehicle. While one year is a fairly mediocre coverage term in the luxury car world, we’re impressed by the warranty’s unlimited mileage figure. The warranty can also be extended once the year is up, though doing so requires a hefty additional fee.

The Mercedes-Benz CPO program also boasts a few other benefits for car shoppers looking for a worry-free way to own a Mercedes. For one, the warranty is fully transferable to another private party, should you decide to sell before your coverage has expired. Additionally, there’s no deductible on covered repairs,  meaning you won’t pay a thing if your certified pre-owned Mercedes needs work covered under the warranty.

Our take? While the Mercedes-Benz CPO warranty is very short, it provides peace of mind, especially if you renew it for a couple of years after it expires. We’d also shop the competition. Many, such as Lexus, have longer CPO warranty coverage.

  1. When we bought our ML 350, it was less than a year old with 6000 miles on it. It was a CPO car and we bought out that warranty another two years at a hefty cost. While I won’t say they misrepresented the warranty, I was under the impression it was moving the original factory warranty out. Two weeks ago the mechanism that operates the center console doors broke. Not covered, we were told. How can moving parts not be covered? A far cry from “The Best Or Nothing.” Other brands get shopped the next time we need a car instead of immediately gravitating to MB.

  2. 1 year / unlimited from the time the factory 4 year / 50k mile warranty expires. So a 12 year old car with 26k miles, which advertises a MPO warranty is in fact not going to cover anything, right?
