Many cars become classics. But there are few that have managed to survive as classics for more than a few years. The Mustang is one of those exceptions. The original pony car celebrated its 35th anniversary on April 17th 1999.

It has been the most popular car in the fashion conscious small sporty segment for most of its illustrious career. The reasons are simple - it offers good looks, good performance, and pleasant driving as well as great value for the money.

There are several variations to choose from in the pre-owned market, ranging from a base model with V-6 engine and manual transmission through to a high performance race-bred Cobra model that will give many sports cars a run for their money at a lot less cost.

Call it brotherly love. The 1995 Mustang GT I tested belonged to the brother of a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 owner. It was a good opportunity to try the two cars side by side.

I doubt whether there are many Mustangs that have not been modified. It seems that owners of these pony cars always want to individualize their cars. It's not necessarily a bad thing but it does mean the buyer of a pre-owned Mustang has to look carefully to see what has been modified and if it meets his or her requirements.

In this case the major modification was an all new gearbox from a different manufacturer. According to the owner the original gearbox had been making a lot of whining noises and the Ford dealership agreed to swap it for a different transmission, which cured the problem. The new gearbox is now standard in all Mustangs with a manual transmission.

Beyond that the car had a modified exhaust system which made the car a little noisier and a couple of other minor changes that helped increase its performance slightly.

I was immediately reminded of what power is all about when I first set off. The car romped down the road. I was impressed at how nice the shifter felt. The engine growled and the car felt quite firm on the road. The ergonomics of the driving position are quite good — a lot nicer than in the Camaro, for example.

The beauty of a large V-8 engine such as the 215 hp 5.0-liter in this Mustang GT is that the car does not have to work very hard to deliver a lot of performance. The car proved docile enough to be able to potter around slowly or to roar away from traffic lights leaving most cars behind in the traffic light grand prix.

The driver and front seat passenger will find there is good space for a long distance ride. Rear seat passengers on the other hand would be better off staying at home unless they are young kids. There is not much room in the back. The seats can be folded down providing a decent amount of storage space for a weekend trip for two.

About one third of Mustangs sold are convertibles, which makes a lot of sense in this sort of car. I also had the opportunity to briefly drive a 1997 convertible powered by a V-6 engine with a manual transmission. I was not disappointed. Even with two-thirds the horsepower the car still performed quite well. There is less storage space in the convertible because of the area set aside to store the ragtop when it is in the down position. Otherwise the convertible is much like the coupe to drive. Naturally the interior is noisier as a ragtop just cannot provide as much sound insulation. The top retracts up and down at the touch of a button, which is neat feature that used only to be found on expensive convertible cars.

How does the Mustang compare to its archrival the Camaro? It is less sporty with its upright driving position. On the other hand this makes it more pleasant to drive over longer distances or for pottering around town. Overall it really is a much more practical car for everyday use.

3. History of Mustang
When the Mustang was first introduced in 1964 it was an immediate hit as it offered good looks and performance in a compact package at an affordable price. The car quickly became an American icon. In its first six years it grew a little bigger each year reaching a size that was too big for the times in 1973. A new smaller Mustang II replaced it in 1974 but this was not well received as it proved to be less sporty than previous models. Ford reacted to the criticism and introduced a new Mustang in 1979 that harked back to the original design. This proved to be more successful but sales were still not as good as before.

In 1994 a heavily revised Mustang was introduced with some strong styling cues from the original car, such as the matching dual-cowl dashboard. At the same time Ford dropped the anemic four-cylinder and hatchback models.

For 1999 Ford further refined the car making its ride and handling better while fine tuning the exterior design to evoke even more of the car's heritage in memory of its 35th anniversary. Over the years various limited edition high-performance various have been produced. Currently there are two such variants, the Cobra and the SVT version. The Cobra has an independent rear suspension for the first time, which helps improve the ride and handling.

4. Review of Current Mustang
I have driven a couple of different samples of the newest 1999 Mustang, and I like them all. But (surprise, surprise) my favorite was the base V-6 powered Mustang with a manual transmission. Its performance was quite impressive, and it was more pleasant in everyday driving. However, if I were to opt for an automatic transmission, I would go for one with a V-8 engine as it has enough power to cope with the inherent losses caused by the automatic transmission.

The newest Mustang is quieter, and its ride has improved. The steering felt as responsive as in any car I've driven. Although I like the design of the latest interior I still found the materials to have a rather cheap finish to them There were a couple of sharp plastic edges from the molding that could graze one's skin.

When you compare the price of a base V-6 Mustang or even a Mustang convertible with a V-8 engine and compare the performance with other cars, it is readily apparent what a bargain the Mustang is compared to other cars on the market. It certainly provides a lot of pleasure for not too great an outlay in today's money.

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.

To be eligible for Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) status, vehicles generally must be recent models with relatively low mileage. CPO vehicles must also pass a detailed inspection, outlined by the manufacturer, which is measured by the number of inspected points.
