10 Best Used Sports Cars Under $20,000

Looking for fun without a lot of cash? Here’s a list of used sports cars that are fun to drive but are well below the average price of a new car.  You’d think the label of “sports car” would be limiting. However, there are a lot of great used cars with decent performance credentials from a variety of manufacturers that fit the bill. If you can swing $20,000 here are some sports cars that offer a lot of bang for your buck.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

1.2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

There’s a lot to like in this little open-top sports car. If raw power is your thing, a used Mazda Miata might not be for you. Under the hood, there’s a 2.0-liter 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing that’s tuned to produce 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers don’t seem all that impressive. However, in the manual version (we strongly suggest you get the manual transmission), 155 hp feels just right. The MX-5 accelerates briskly and always seems to have power on tap when you need it. The 6-speed manual transmission and buttery clutch deliver precise, quick shifting. 2016 is the first year of the current Miata and it’s the best one yet. However, there are many versions of the Miata that offer an excellent sports car feel for much less than $20,000. Find a Mazda Miata for sale

2015 Nissan 370Z

2. 2015 Nissan 370Z

Often overlooked, the Nissan 370Z offers great handling and styling that remains handsome despite its age. You could just get a normal used car. But with the Z, you get a front-mounted V6 engine that makes 332 horsepower, which is plenty of muscle for this lightweight 2-seater. If you can find it, we suggest the Sport Tech trim, this trim adds the Sport trim’s equipment plus Bose Audio, navigation and a rearview monitor. Find a Nissan 370Z for sale

2004 Chevrolet Corvette

3. 2004 Chevrolet Corvette

No list of great used cars would be complete without a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette. 2004 isn’t just a random year for used sports car, it’s the end of the series of Corvettes that ran from 1997 – 2004. The fifth-generation Corvette featured a new LS1 V8 engine, a rear-mounted transaxle and a reworked underbody structure. Gone was the previous generation’s boxy styling, replaced with a design that featured a rounder shape and a swooping rear-end design. Today, the 1997-2004 Corvette is still sought out by collectors and aficionados. Its styling is still somewhat fresh and isn’t plagued with as many problems as Corvette models from 1984-1996. Honda S2000

4. 2007 Honda S2000

A Japanese classic in its own right, the Honda S2000 delivers on its promise of being a driver’s car. That’s borne out by the fact that you can only get a manual transmission. Also, it’s powered by a high-revving 237-horsepower, 2.2-liter turbo 4-cylinder and the S2000 still looks fresh and contemporary today. Find a Honda S2000 for sale

2013 BMW Z4

5. 2013 BMW Z4

This 2-seater offers great handling plus top-down open air cruising. While not as edgy as other sports cars, the BMW Z4 offers a more refined experience with more luxe creature comforts. Even with the standard 240-horsepower turbo 4-cylinder instead of the inline-6, you won’t be wanting for power. Find a BMW Z4 for sale

2018 Toyota 86

9. 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK

When it comes to great used sports cars, the Mercedes-Benz SLK offers the perfect blend of fun-to-drive spirit with serious luxury overtones. 2015 Ford Mustang

10. 2015 Ford Mustang

2015 is the year Ford gave us an all-new Mustang. Mustang fans have their favorites but the latest version exceptional. An EcoBoost 4-cylinder will be the best value.  During our interior evaluation, we found the 2015 Mustang to be quite simply the nicest muscle car ever built. There’s nothing crude in here — just rich materials, attractive gauges, supportive seats, and even cool metallic toggle switches for certain functions. When new, there were optional Recaro bucket seats  – look for these if you plan to do any track driving. Find a Ford Mustang for sale
