It's safe to say we're in the era of the sport utility vehicle. Thanks to their immense practicality, not to mention the fact that most offer all-wheel drive, new and used vehicle buyers are having a hard time justifying buying anything but an SUV. Here are nine used SUVs that make good options for anyone working with a budget of around $10,000.

Keep in mind that it's always a good idea to test drive a few different models before ultimately making a decision, even if you think you know exactly what you want. Additionally, it's always a good idea to get a pre-purchase inspection -- conducted by an impartial third party -- before committing to buy.

2009-2014 Subaru Outback

2009-2014 Subaru Outback

The fourth-generation Subaru Outback was introduced for the 2009 model year and sold through 2014. Based on the Legacy sedan, the Outback offers an increased ride height -- which surprisingly rivals that of many "rugged" SUVs -- a practical wagon body style and clever roof rails that incorporate retractable crossbars that can be folded out when needed, or stowed to cut down on noise and wind resistance when not needed. The Outback is offered with either a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder putting out 170 horsepower or a 3.6-liter V6 good for 256 hp, either of which comes paired with Subaru's standard AWD. There are currently close to 500 2009-2014 Subaru Outbacks for sale on Autotrader. Of that 500, 65 are from the 2013 or later, when the Outback received its midcycle update. 2003-2011 Honda Element

2003-2011 Honda Element

The Honda Element is one of a kind for a number of reasons. It wears a design that manages to be both conservative and quirky at the same time. Thanks to its boxy design, the Element manages to be supremely practical. It's technically a 4-door, but its rear doors are technically half doors that are hinged at the rear and are functional only when the front doors are open. Due to this, the Element has no pillar between the front and rear doors, which allows for a large opening through which to insert items like pets or bikes or large boxes. The Element also forgoes carpeting in favor of durable rubber flooring, which makes it easier to clean. Powering the Element is a 2.4-liter 166-hp 4-cylinder engine and AWD is optional. Altogether, this makes for a great all-purpose vehicle that is both functional and efficient. There are currently about 400 Honda Elements for sale on Autotrader for around $10,000 or less. 2014-2017 Kia Soul

2014-2017 Kia Soul

The Soul is another boxy hatchback that offers a blend of SUV dimensions and car like efficiencies. With plenty of room for cargo, the Soul is a favorite among those looking for practicality without sacrificing too much with regard to ride quality, maneuverability and fuel economy. That said, unlike some other affordable boxy used SUVs that offer the benefit of available AWD, the Soul is front-wheel drive only. The second-generation Soul was introduced back in 2014 and is still on sale today. Buyers have a variety of second-gen Souls to choose from for under $10,000, some of which are from as recently as the 2017 model year. Right now on Autotrader, there are around 600 2014-or-newer Kia Souls listed for $10,000 or less. Find a Kia Soul for sale

2007-2012 GMC Acadia

2007-2012 GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia is a great family SUV with room for eight people and plenty of cargo space. Introduced in 2007, the Acadia shares its platform with the likes of the Chevrolet Traverse, the Buick Enclave and the Saturn Outlook. A great alternative to a minivan, the Acadia is available with either a second-row bench or captain's chairs -- the latter of which reduces seating capacity to seven. Regardless, the Acadia's second and third row seats fold completely flat, allowing for ample cargo space when you need it. Powering the Acadia is a 3.6-liter V6 putting out 288 hp, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds, which is sufficient for towing a small boat or camp trailer. Additionally, parts and service are easy to come by, given how many of these 3-row SUVs have been sold by General Motors over the years. Right now there are around 600 2007-2012 GMC Acadias listed for sale on Autotrader. Find a GMC Acadia for sale

2005-2015 Nissan Xterra

2005-2015 Nissan Xterra

If you're looking for a go-anywhere truck like SUV, there's really no better option than a used Nissan Xterra. A competitor to the Toyota 4Runner, the first-generation Xterra was sold from the 1999 through 2004 model years, while a second-generation model was introduced for 2005 and sold through 2015. The Xterra shared components with the Frontier pickup, and made use of a 4.0-liter V6 putting out 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. While an Xterra will be a bit rougher and less efficient than a tamer car-based crossover, it offers great utility, and is able to tackle terrain that would stop a crossover dead in its tracks. Buyers looking for a cheap 4x4 alternative to the 4Runner should seek out a used Xterra, and there are currently close to 350 listed on Autotrader for $10,000 or less, some of which are as new as the 2013 model year. 2013-2016 Ford Escape

2013-2016 Ford Escape

Ford's compact SUV, the Escape, was introduced back in 2000 and has been a hot seller ever since. The third-generation Escape was introduced back in 2013 and is still on sale today, and early examples can now be had in the $10,000 range. The Escape offers available AWD, efficient turbocharged engine options, a touchscreen infotainment system and a unique hands-free lift gate -- just wave your foot under the rear bumper and the door opens, making it easier to load armfuls of groceries into the rear cargo are without missing a beat. Another great thing about the Escape? There are a ton of them out there, and buyers should have no problems finding a 2013-2016 model for under $10,000, as there are currently over 500 listed on Autotrader that fit the bill. 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner

2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner is beloved for its reliability and ruggedness. Now in its fifth generation, the 4Runner is experiencing a sales resurgence among buyers looking to go off-roading. Given the vehicle's endless utility, newer examples hold their values quite well, making it nearly impossible to find a 2010 or newer example from the 4Runner's fifth generation for anything close to $10,000. This leads us to the fourth-generation model, offered from 2003-2009. The fourth-gen 4Runner was even available with a potent 4.7-liter V8, making it great for towing, although gas mileage wasn't great. Still, as long as you filter out 2-wheel drive models, a 4Runner is going to offer great off-road capability thanks to its traditional 4-wheel drive transfer case and good ground clearance. Currently on Autotrader, buyers have over 500 2003-2009 4Runners to choose from for $10,000 or less. Find a Toyota 4Runner for sale

2007-2009 Lexus RX

2007-2009 Lexus RX

Introduced in 1998, the Lexus RX is the best-selling luxury SUV of all time, and second-generation models, sold from 2004-2009, are easy to find for around $10,000. We recommend looking for an updated 2007-2009 model, and there are currently over 400 listed on Autotrader that fit within our budget. Over these years, the RX was offered as both the RX 350 with a 3.5-liter V6 putting out 275 hp, and as the RX 400h, which made use of a hybrid system allowing for 30 miles per gallon combined while putting out a still-potent 297 hp. Of the 400 2007-2009 RX models listed on Autotrader for around $10k, over 50 are of the hybrid variety. Regardless of which one you choose, the RX offers good luxury features, a strong powertrain, great reliability and available AWD. Find a Lexus RX for sale

2007-2012 Acura RDX

2007-2012 Acura RDX

When it launched, the RDX was unique in that it offered a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, making for a fun drive. In a sea of ho-hum fuel-conscious crossover SUVs, the RDX stood out for its sports car roots. Speaking of fuel consciousness, the RDX didn't get great fuel economy, returning only 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, so if you don't value its fun-to-drive nature, an RDX might not be for you. Still, it's hard to deny the RDX's unique packaging, quick acceleration, agile handling, hatchback practicality, available AWD and compact car dimensions. The RDX also has some unique interior quirks too, like a massive, lockable center console capable of swallowing an entire laptop computer. Find one with the tech package, and the RDX comes with a variety of modern features like a backup camera, Bluetooth connectivity and a 10-speaker stereo. Additionally, every first-gen RDX comes with an auxiliary port, a must-have in 2019. Right now on Autotrader, there are close to 200 first-generation RDXs listed for around $10,000 and around 80 percent of those offer AWD. Find an Acura RDX for sale
