If a new car isn’t in the budget and you’re worried about potential problems with a used vehicle, a certified pre-owned ("CPO") model might be the best choice for you. That’s because CPO cars and trucks are often lightly used, with a long factory warranty for greater peace of mind over a typical used car. Best of all, some automakers offer CPO deals and special offers to help sweeten the pot for shoppers interested in a certified vehicle. To help you find the best deal on a great certified pre-owned vehicle, we’ve rounded up some of the top incentives available this month from a few of our favorite CPO programs.
Acura MDX and RDX
Acura’s certified pre-owned program provides strong peace of mind, offering one year or 12,000 miles of additional comprehensive coverage and up to seven years of powertrain protection from the vehicle’s original sale date. In December, Acura is also offering an excellent incentive for qualified shoppers interested in the MDX and RDX crossovers. Through the end of the month, the automaker is offering 0.9 percent interest for up to 36 months on both crossovers — a good deal for a used vehicle, especially with the reassurance of Acura’s long CPO warranty.
The BMW i3 is a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle with quirky, unusual styling and a futuristic interior. Meanwhile, BMW offers a good certified pre-owned program, touting one year of comprehensive coverage with unlimited mileage from the expiration of the original factory warranty. In December, you can combine the two and get an excellent deal, as BMW is offering 0 percent interest for up to 60 months on all certified pre-owned 2013, 2014 and 2015 i3 models — a great deal that’s virtually never seen on a used vehicle, and especially a used luxury vehicle like a BMW.
Chevrolet’s certified pre-owned program offers two reassuring warranties. The first is a comprehensive warranty that offers coverage for one year or 12,000 miles from the CPO purchase date; the second is a powertrain warranty that boasts six years or 100,000 miles of coverage from the original sale date. Both are appealing, and their appeal is enhanced in December as Chevrolet is touting a strong incentive to shoppers: Through the end of the month, qualified shoppers can get 1.9 percent interest for up to 36 months on certified pre-owned versions of the Cruze, the Equinox, the Malibu, the Silverado or the Traverse — a good deal for a used vehicle.
GMC’s certified pre-owned program is identical to Chevrolet’s, described above. Two warranties are included with the purchase of a certified pre-owned GMC vehicle; the first is a comprehensive warranty that offers one year or 12,000 miles of coverage, while the second is a powertrain warranty that boasts coverage for six years or 100,000 miles from the original sale date. Also like Chevy, GMC is touting a strong incentive this month: Through the end of December, qualified shoppers can get a certified pre-owned Acadia SUV, Sierra pickup or Terrain SUV with 1.9 percent interest for up to 36 months.
Lincoln’s certified pre-owned program is among the best in the luxury car world, as it touts six years or 100,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage from the original sale date — a long warranty that should be desirable to any shopper interested in peace of mind. In December, Lincoln also has another good deal available: Through the end of the month, any certified pre-owned Lincoln model is offered with 2.9 percent interest for up to 66 months, which is an unusually long term for a used vehicle — especially one with a long warranty.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA is the brand’s entry-level sedan model, offering luxurious equipment and sporty, coupe-like styling. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz’s CPO program offers 1 year of unlimited-mileage bumper-to-bumper coverage with additional years available for an extra fee. In December, certified pre-owned versions of the CLA are offered with an incentive to lure shoppers away from the competition and from other used cars: through the end of the month, qualified shoppers can finance a certified pre-owned CLA with 1.99 percent interest, which is an unusually generous offer for a certified pre-owned Mercedes-Benz.
Nissan’s certified pre-owned program doesn’t offer an additional bumper-to-bumper warranty like the coverage offered by some automakers — but it does tout a long powertrain warranty that boasts a generous seven years or 100,000 miles of coverage from the original sale date. In December, Nissan’s CPO program offers two incentives for qualified shoppers looking for a good deal: The best offer is 1.95 percent interest for up to 36 months, which is a good rate for a used car. Most shoppers will also appreciate the other deal: 3.99 percent interest for up to 72 months, which is a higher rate but an impressively long term for a low-interest deal on a used car.
Volkswagen’s certified pre-owned program adds two years or 24,000 miles of warranty coverage to the original Volkswagen factory warranty on any model. In December, Volkswagen’s certified pre-owned program also boasts a strong incentive valid through the end of the month: Qualified shoppers interested in financing a certified pre-owned Volkswagen model can get 1.99 percent interest for up to 60 months — an unusually long (and desirable) term, and a deal that’s valid on any certified pre-owned model in the entire Volkswagen lineup.
